Crafts & Activities

Alphabet Soup Name Bracelet
It's fun to make name bracelets out of alphabet egg noodles. Spell out your name with some uncooked noodles. Then cut out a small narrow strip of thin cardboard, just big enough to fit your name on. Paste the letters of your name on this strip. When the paste is dry, paint the whole bracelet with poster paint. Carefully poke a hole at each end of the bracelet and pass a small string through both ends. Just slip the name bracelet on your wrist and tie the two ends together.

ABC BINGO
Make Bingo cards with upper or lower case letters. Match upper case to lower case, etc.. - First child to cover the card calls "BINGO!"

Alphabet Box
Children bring in an item in a shoebox that starts with the letter of the day. During circle, each child has an opportunity to share his item and discuss it. If you have many children in your group, have the children bring their boxes in on Monday and a few children share each day throughout the week.

Songs & Finger Plays

A B C D E F G
Sung to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"

A B C D E F G,

W and X Y Z,
Now I've learned my A B C's,
Next time wonn't you sing with me.

BINGO
There was a farmer who had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O,
and Bingo was his name-o.

Sing out the letters B-I-N-G-O on the first verse, clap once for B on the second verse, twice for B-I on the third verse, and so on, substituting claps for letters until you clap out Bingo's whole name, keeping the rhythm of the song as you go. You can also use a glove puppet with big red letters on each finger and a little puppy puppet stuck in the center. Or use letters and a little dog on the felt board.

Recipes

Pretzel Letters
Prepare pretzel dough:
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 envelope of yeast
4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
Mix all ingredients. Give each of the children enough dough to shape into the first letter of their name. Brush dough letters with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 425 degrees for twelve minutes.
