This is a summary of the information I have found so far for the children of Thomas Sancaster and Elizabeth Fulthorp. For convenience I refer to them as the "First Family" as everybody with Sancaster ancestry appears to be descended from them.

THOMAS SANCASTER 1820

1820 Born Penrith father John Sancaster as noted on his Marriage certificate

1840 On Roberts Birth certificate his occupation is given as Cartman and his surname is spelt Sankester

1841 Census: He is 20 working as a Cartman and living in Gateshead, Boitors Building.  Also living with him is his wife Elizabeth 15, Elizabeth Foulthorp 35, Michel Foulthorp 5 and Robert Sankester age 1 month.

Thomas and family are entered on the Census as Sankester.

1843 On John Sancaster's birth certificate his occupation is given as Cartman, living at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead.

1844 On John Sancaster's death certificate in 1844 his occupation is given as Labourer and living at Rabbit Banks.

1845 On Elizabeth Sancaster's birth certificate in 1845 his occupation is given as Cartman and living at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead.

1851 On Michael Sancaster's birth certificate in 1851 his occupation is given as Cartman and living at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead.

1851 Census: He is 30 working as a Cartman and living in Gateshead, Rabbit Banks. Also living with him is his wife aeElizabeth 27, Son Robert age 10, Daughter Elizabeth age 5, Son Thomas age 3, Son Michael age 2 months (listed as Abraskie?) and Daughter Mary age 2 months. Their surname is listed as Lancaster in the census and are also all listed as being born in Gateshead.

1853 on John Sancaster's birth certificate his occupation is given as Cartman, and living at Rabbit Bank, Gateshead.

1856 On Ralph Sancaster's certificate in 1856 his occupation is given as Cartman and living at Piperwellgate, Gateshead.

1861 Census: The Family name is listed as Sangester. Thomas is 42 and working as a Drayman. He is living there with his family. Wife Elizabeth age 39, Daughter Elizabeth age 15, Son Thomas age 13, son Michael age 10, Daughter Ann age 2 and Son William age 3 Months.

1865 On John Sancaster's birth certificate his occupation is given as Railway Waggoner, living at 4 Gibbson Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1871 Census: The Family name is listed on the census as Sangster. Thomas is 52 and working as a Cartman. He is living with his family. Wife Elizabeth age 49, Son Michael age 20, Daughter Ann age 12, son William age 10 and Son John age 5. They are living at 4 Gibson Street. His son Thomas is living in the same house with his wife Elizabeth and son Thomas.

1874 On Ann Sancaster and William Kenion's marriage certificate his occupation is given as a Cartman.

1881 Census: (CD)Thomas and his family are listed under the Surname Lancaster. Living at 529 Scotswood Road,

Elswick, Northumberland. . He was a Cartman age 61, his wife Elizabeth age 58, son William age 20 and son John age 15. His daughter Ann was living in the house next door at 531.

1883 Death Certificate 1883 4th Quarter/ Vol: 10b/ Page: 8/ District: Newcastle upon Tyne

Died 14 October 1883 at 529 Scotswood Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne age 66. The certificate says that he was a Copper Finisher. The death was reported by Mrs A Sancaster daughter-in-law present at death of 2 Forth Street, Newcastle. On the certificate it states he died of Paralysis.

ROBERT SANCASTER 1840

1840: Born 16 September 1840 at Close, Saint Nicholas, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

On his birth certificate his surname is spelt Sankester.

1851 Census: He 10 years old and living in Gateshead at Rabbit Banks. With his family. His father Thomas age 30, working as a cartman. Also living there is his mother Elizabeth 27, Sister Elizabeth age 5, Brother Thomas age 3, Brother Michael age 2 months (listed as Abraskie?) and Sister Mary age 2 months. They are listed as Lancaster in the census and are also all listed as being born in Gateshead. Robert was born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

1866: He married his wife Emily Thomas in Wales. 1866 4th Quarter, Pembroke, Vol 11a, Page 1343

They married in Tenby, Wales on the 22nd December 1866. The certificate gives his age is as 28 and he appears to be a Private in the 9th Regiment. His place of residence was given as Pennal about 1.5 miles from Tenby. His father is given as Thomas Sancaster a Cartman.

1871 Census: He is living at 11 Chatham Place, All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne. His surname is given as Sancaster age 29 working as a cartman. His wife Emily age 28 and Jane Davis is listed as his sister in law age 16 and a General Servant.

1881 Census:  he was recorded as living at 47 Bermondsey Street, Byker, Newcastle, Occupation was given as Cartman. Also living there was his wife Emily age 40, born in Tenby and his son Robert age 9, born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

This was the same address his brother Thomas.

1891 Census:  He is 49 years old, living in Tenby, Wales with his wife Emily age 46 and two children Robert age 19, born in Newcastle and Emily age 9 born in Newcastle. The address is not clear, Park Road. His occupation is given a Gas Stoker. On the transcription in Ancestry.com his surname is given as Saucaster. On checking the original it was Sancaster.

1892: When his wife died on the 1st January 1892 in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, they were living at Upper Park Road and his occupation is given as a Stoker at Gas Yard. She died of Stomach Cancer.

1901 Census: he was 63 years old and recorded as living at 65 Beresford Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. His occupation was Cartman. This was the same house as William and Ann Kenion and their family. Robert is down as head of the household and it must have been his house. No sign of his son Robert though who would have been 29.

1911 Census: His age is given as 70, living again at 65 Beresford Road with the Kenions and his nephew Thomas Sancaster and children. His occupation is given as Hawker.

1914: He died 20 May 1914, at 7 Cheviot View at the age of 73. His occupation is given as a Cartman and formerly a private in the army. His cause of death is given as 1) Senile Decay and 2) Acute Bronchitis Cardiac Failure. The informant was his niece J.A.Kenion of 65 Beresford Road, Newcastle.

JOHN SANCASTER 1843

1843: Born 18th February 1843 at Rabbit Bank, Gateshead. He was registered as Sankester, the Mother was Elizabeth (Foulthorp) and the father Thomas, occupation given as Cartman.

1844: Died 27th June 1844 at Rabbit Banks on his death age 1 year 5 months and died of Consumption. He is noted as son of Thomas Sancaster, Labourer. The person given as present at death was Eleanor Pettigrew of Rabbit Banks.

 ELIZABETH SANCASTER 1845

1845. Born 30 Sep 1845. at Rabbit Bank, Gateshead, her mother was Elizabeth (Foulthorp) and father Thomas, occupation Cartman.

1861 Census.: She is age 15 and her surname is given as Sangester. Her father Thomas is 42 and working as a Drayman, mother Elizabeth age 39, brother Thomas age 13, brother Michael age 10, sister Ann age 2 and brother William age 3 Months

1862: Marriage Certificate 24th June to Abraham Armstrong. Elizabeth was 17 and Abraham 22 an Iron Moulder both listed as living at Pandon Bank, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her father is given as Thomas Samcaster, Cartman

1871 Census: She is age 25 and her surname is Armstrong. Her husband is head of the house Abraham age 30, occupation Moulder, born in Newcastle. Also in the house is her son Abraham age 7 a scholar born in Newcastle. Also Dorothy Spearman age 70, widow a former lodging house keeper born in Alnwick, Northumberland. All living at 4 Tynham Street, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1881 Census: Elizabeth is 35 born Gatehead, living with her husband Abraham Armstong age 40, occupation Iron Moulder at Work, born in Newcastle. Living at 5 Hamsterley Road, Elswick, newcastle upon Tyne.

 1887: Death of her Husband Abraham Armstrong 8th October 1887, at 144 Newgate Street, Newcastle at the age of 47, Occupation Iron Moulder. Died if Phthisis. Present at death was John Brown of 4 Terrance Place, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1888: Marriage Certificate of Elizabeth Armstrong widow age 42 and Isaac Armstrong widower age 41, Occupation Brick Layer. Residence of Isaac, 29 Hedley Terrace Newcastle, Elizabeth at Newgate Street, Newcastle. Father of Isaac, Frank Armstrong (deceased), Stone Mason. Father of Elizabeth, Thomas Sancaster (deceased), Cartman. At The Register Office, Newcastle upon Tyne. Witnesses were John Black and Margaret Black

1889: Death Certificate of Elizabeth, 5th June 1889 at Bacchus Inn, Newgate Street, Newcastle at the age of 43, Acute Nephthsis (Pulmonary tuberculosis), 10 days and Peripheral Neusitis Alch months. (it tends to affect people who drink too much) Wife of Isaac Armstrong, Pubican. Present at death I Armstrong widower of deceased, present at Bucchus Inn, Newgate Street, Newcastle.

 

THOMAS SANCASTER 1848

1848: Born 29th January 1848 at Rabbit Banks, Gatehead and appears as Thomas Sancaster on his birth certificate and gives his fathers occupation is as Cartman.  Mother Elizabeth formerly Foulthorp

1861 Census: He is age 13 and her surname is given as Sangester. His father is Thomas age 42 and working as a Drayman. His mother Elizabeth age 39, sister Elizabeth age 15, brother Michael age 10, sister Ann age 2 and brother William age 3 Months.

1871 Census:  The Family name is listed on the census as Sangster. Thomas is 23 and working as a Cartman listed as head of the house. Living with his wife Elizabeth age 22 and son Thomas age 1. He is living in the same house as his parents also at 4 Gibson Street.

His father Thomas is 52 and working as a Cartman and listed as head of the house with his Wife Elizabeth age 49, Son Michael age 20, Daughter Ann age 12, son William age 10 and Son John age 5. They are living at 4 Gibson Street. His son Thomas is living in the same house with his wife Elizabeth and son Thomas.

1881 Census: The family is listed as LANCASTER although having looked at the original record is it Sancaster. Living at 47 Bermondsey Street, Byker. Thomas is 39 working as a Cartman. His wife is Elizabeth age 31. Son Thomas age 11, daughter Jane Anne age 9, daughter Elizabeth age 7 and daughter Frances age 4.

1881: 6th October 1881. On his daughter Emily's birth certificate his occupation is given as Cartman. Living at 47 Bermondsey Street. His wife Elizabeth died in childbirth and Emily appears to have been brought up by his brother Robert and Emily his wife.

1891 Census: Thomas and his family are staying with his brother John. John is head of the household, Cartman age 25, wife Margaret 22, Elizabeth 2, Margaret 8 months. Thomas age 45, Cartman, daughter Jane , age 19 Shop Girl, daughter  Elizabeth age 16 Servant, daughter Frances age 14 Servant. Address 12 great Crispin Street?, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1901:  Unable to locate him on the census to date.

1911 Census: Thomas appears to be staying at the Newcastle on Tyne Workhouse, Westgate Road, Elswick age 65 and is listed as a Widower, Factory Labourer. He is transcribed as SANCESTER and it does look like that on the original census image. Cannot be 100% sure that this is him but it does seem to fit.

1913: He Died 4th March 1913 at Workhouse Hospital. His death certificate gives an age of  67, occupation General Labourer of 65 Beresford Road, Newcastle. He died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Informant was T Johnson, son in law of 23 Beech Street, Newcastle

MICHAEL SANCASTER 1851

1851. Recorded in the Register of Births as Michael Lancaster and his birth certificate

1856:  Born on the 7th May 1856: On his birth Certificate he was born at 12.30am at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead. His father was Thomas as Cartman and mother Elizabeth formerly Foulthorp. All surnames are to be Lancaster on the Certificate.

1875.  When his son John Thomas was born he was working as a Cartman and was living at 18 Stepney Square.

1881 Census:  The family were recorded as Lancester. Michael was head age 30 working as a Cartman. Wife Mary A age 25, son Thomas age 4 and son John L age 1. Living at 2 Forth Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, St John, Northumberland.

1891 Census: They were living at, 44 Stepney Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.

1900: Died 3rd July 1900 at 59 Gosforth Street, Newcastle age 47. Occupation given as Cartman. Cause of death Acute Gastritis, (Heart Failure). The informant was John Lough Sancaster is son of 59 Gosforth Street.

MARY SANCASTER 1851

1851: Mary's birth certificate in January 1851 time of 00.40 am, her fathers occupation is given as Cartman and living at Rabbit Banks, Gateshead. The certificate gives the surname as Lancaster. Mother Elizabeth Foulthorp.

1851 Census: She is 2 months old and is the twin sister of Michael. She is living as Rabbit Banks, Gateshead with her parents Thomas Sancaster and Elizabeth Sancaster.

1851 Death: Died at Rabbit Banks age 3 months the certificate states, Convulsions No Medical Attendant, Doughter of Thomas Sancaster a Labourer.

JOHN SANCASTER 1853

1853:  Born 22 September 1853, father Thomas Sancaster, Mother Elizabeth Sancaster (Fulthorp) the address is given as Rabbit Bank, Gateshead.

1855:  Died 22 September 1855: His death certificate gives his age as 2 years and gives his place of death as Pipewellgate Banks in Gateshead. Son of Thomas Sankaster, a Cartsman. I am unable to read his cause of death. The person given as being at his death is Ellen Patterson. Rabbit Banks, Gateshead.

RALPH SANCASTER 1856

1856: Born on 7th May 1856. The certificate gives the address as Pipewellgate, Gateshead. Father Thomas Sancaster, Cartman, Mother Elizabeth Sancaster formerly Foulthorp

1857 Death: I applied for this certificate and I got a letter back stating "There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference quoted" I have seen the original GRO index and there is an entry for him squeezed between two lines.

ANNE SANCASTER 1858

1858: Born 5th June 1858:  On her birth certificate is says that she was born at Pipewellgate, Gateshead. The birth was registered on the 17 July. Her father is listed as Thomas Sancaster, Cartman. Her mother is listed as Isabella Sancaster (formally Foulthorp).

1861 Census: The Family name is given as Sangester. The father is Thomas age 42 and working as a Drayman, mother Elizabeth age 39, sister Elizabeth age 15, brother Thomas age 13, brother Michael age 10, and brother William age 3 Months.

1871 Census:  The Family name is listed on the census as Sangster. She is listed as Anne age 12. Her father Thomas is 52 and working as a Cartman and listed as head of the house with her mother Elizabeth age 49, brother Michael age 20, brother William age 10 and brother John age 5. They are living at 4 Gibson Street.

Her Uncle Thomas is 23 and working as a Cartman listed as head of the house. Living with his wife Elizabeth age 22 and son Thomas age 1. He is living in the same house as his parents also at 4 Gibson Street

1874. Married 26th August 1874 to William Christopher Kenion. On her marriage certificate she is named as Ann Sangster, age 18 living at Gibson Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. She could not sign the certificate. They were married in the Register Office. The witnesses were Thomas Sangster (Sancaster) and Abraham Armstrong.

1881 Census:  Anne was 22 years of age lived at 531 Scotswood Road. In the Census their name was spelt KENNION. Her husband William Kennions age 27, occupation Hair Dresser also in the household was Elizabeth A daughter age 5 and Isabella A daughter age 2. Anns parents lived next door.

1891 Census:   Anne is 32 years of age living at 194 Park Street, Byker, Newcastle.  Her husband William Kenion is age 37 a barber. Also in the house is her son Abraham age 8, her daughter Elizabeth age 15, daughter Isabella age 12 and her widowed mother Elizabeth Sancaster, Lodger age 71.

1901 Census: Anne is living with her Uncle Robert age 63 years and recorded as head of the household at 65 Beresford Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Also in the house is Annes husband William Kenion age 48, barber along with her sone Abraham age 17, a brass moulder apprentice, Jane A her niece and Thomas her nephew and her niece Emily Sancaster age 19 a folder in a printer works.

1911 Census: She is age 55, listed as head of the Household, address 65 Beresford Road, Byker, Newcastle. Thomas Kenion age 16 is in the house but listed as Boarder. He could be her son Thomas Sancaster Kenion. There is also a list of Sancasters including her Uncle Robert age 70.

1938. Died 7th of October 1838. On her death certificate she died of Cerebral Haemorrhage & Arteriosclerosis. She died at 15 Eleanor Terrace, Whickham, Co Durham 07 Oct 1898. Her daughter Jane A Proud was present at death. Widow of William Kenion a Hairdresser.

WILLIAM SANCASTER 1860

1860: Born 27 December 1860: On his birth certificate he was born at Rabbit Banks. Registered 06 Feb 1861.

1871 Census:  The Family name is listed on the census as Sangster. He is listed as William age 10. This father Thomas is 52 and working as a Cartman and listed as head of the house with his mother Elizabeth age 49, brother Michael age 20, sister Anne age 12 and brother John age 5. They are living at 4 Gibson Street.

His Uncle Thomas is 23 and working as a Cartman listed as head of the house. Living with his wife Elizabeth age 22 and son Thomas age 1. He is living in the same house as his parents also at 4 Gibson Street

1881 Census: William age 20 and his family are listed under the Surname Lancaster. Living at 529 Scotswood Road, Elswick, Northumberland. His occupation is given as a barber . His father Thomas was a Cartman age 61, his mother Elizabeth age 58, and brother John age 15. His sister Ann was living in the house next door at 531

1883: William married Sarah Jane Corbett.

1889:  William and his wife Sarah Jane appear to have been in court charged with two others with Unlawfully Wounding. Their surnames appear as Sandcaster. William received a sentence of 6 calendar months; his wife was given a 3 months sentence. Also Robert Gardner received 12 months and a Margaret Ann Gardner 3 months . In 1892 William and Janes 3rd son was named Robert Gardiner Sancaster.

1891 Census: Found on Ancestry.com mis-transcribed as Saicester. Living at 8 Palace Street, Westgate, Newcastle Upon Tyne, in the St Matthew Parish. Head of houshold,  age 29 working as a Shipyard Labourer living with his wife Sarah. J 26 years, Son William 7 years, Margaret A G Daur 4 years and Thomas son age 2.

1895: On John Ormston Sancasters birth in 1895 they were living at 13 Mairston Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. His employment is given as Shipyard Labourer

1886: Died 21 September 1896 age 33. The death certificate gives his occupation as ship yard labourer of Newcastle. Cause of death is given as Fracture of the spine accidentally incurred Under informant it says this Certificate received from Theodore Hoyle Coroner for Newcastle upon Tyne held 22nd September 1896 (It looks like he died from an industrial accident).

JOHN SANCASTER 1860

1865: The surname Sangster appears on his birth Certificate, born at 4 Gibson Street, Newcastle. Thomas, his father's occupation given as railway waggoner. Mother Elizabeth Fulthorpe.

1881 Census: John age 15 and his family are listed under the Surname Lancaster. Living at 529 Scotswood Road, Elswick, Northumberland. His occupation is given as a barber . His father Thomas was a Cartman age 61, his mother Elizabeth age 58, and brother William age 20. His sister Ann was living in the house next door at 531

1888:  Married 25 November 1888.  On his marriage certificate his occupation is given as a Labourer, age 22, resident at 90 Monk Street, Gateshead. His wife was Margaret Philips

1891 Census: Living at 12 Crispin Street, Elswick North, Newcastle. The family is listed as Lancaster. John is the Head of the household age 25 occupation Cartman. His with is Margaret age 22.Also staying at the house are his daughters Elizabeth age 2 and Margaret age 8 months. Also in the house is his Brother Thomas age 45 a Cartman, Jane niece age 19 a shop girl, Elizabeth niece age 16 servant and Frances niece age 14, servant.

1901 Census: Living at 55 Gosforth Street, Byker, Newcastle. The family is listed as Sancaster. John is head of the household age 39, occupation cartman. His wife is Margaret age 33. Also living in the house is daughter Elizabeth age 13, daughter Margaret age 11, daughter Eliza age 3, son Michael age 7, son David age 5 and daughter Aggie age 1 month.

1911 Census: Living at 146 Commercial Road, Byker, Newcastle. The family is listed as Sancaster. John is head of the household age 46, occupation Labourer Colliery Screen(above ground). His wife is Margaret age 43. Also living in the house is daughter Elizabeth age 13, daughter Margaret Ellen age 20 Servant (Domestic), daughter Eliza Emma Elliot age 18, Servant (Domestic), Son John Thomas 16, Pony Driver (below ground), son George Michael age 14 Pony Driver (below ground), son David Philips age 12 and daughter Aggie age 10, son William Kennon age 6, son Frank Sancaster age 2 and nephew Michael Sancaster age 20..

1949: Died 13th October 1949 at 83 years of age Burnside Avenue, Annitsford, Longheaton, Northumberland. Retired Colliery Serviceman
