This page gives you an idea of the research I am working on at the moment

There are three main lines of research that I am currently working on.

1)    Thomas Sancaster born approximately 1820 Penrith, Cumberland.

2)    Elizabeth Foulthorp born approximately 1823 Dunstun, County Durham.

3)    Robert Sancaster born approximately 1872, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The first, I have tried to locate his father in the Penrith area but have very little information to go on, his name according to Thomas marriage certificate was John Sancaster but it could be any of the variants we have become used to but on the certificate it also says that he was a Miller. Now that should be an useful clue to follow but so far I have not been successful.

The second has been more interesting and seems to be bearing fruit. If you look at the 1841 Census there was an Elizabeth Foulthorp age 35 and a Michael Foulthorp age 5 staying with Elizabeth and Thomas Sancaster at the time of the Census. Sadly that census did not give the relationship of those in a household. The 1841 census gave ages to the nearest 5 years except those under the age on 5.

Sadly I found their deaths within 3 years of 1841. Michael died on 11th July 1843 at Rabbit Banks of Consumption age 7. He was noted on the death certificate as being the son of Elizabeth Foulthorp, Single Woman. This means that Michael was probably illegitimate. Sadly Elizabeth died on the 8th of November 1844 at Piperwellgate again of consumption. Her age was given as 44. Which is older that the census just 3 years previous. It also notes that she was a singlewoman and that Elizabeth Sancaster was present at her death. I therefore suspect that Elizabeth Foulthorp was Elizabeths mother but I have no way of proving that at present.

We can therefore look for Elizabeth Sancasters (Foulthorp) birth. If we assume she was 17 in 1841, in the 1851 census she is 27. Therefore she was born about 1824. I have found an entry for a birth of Elizabeth Carrick or Fulthorp 20th April 1822, with the christening taking place on the 22 May 1822 in Whickham, County Durham. Father John Carrick and Mother Elizabeth Fulthorp. The Carrick or Fulthorp may indicate an illegitimate birth. Now we can look for the birth of her mother. We now have conflicting information in 1841 she is 35 and in 1844 she is 44. I will go with the 35 only because it would have been her that gave the census information at the time. We are therefore looking for a birth about 1806, and few years either way. Now there was an Elizabeth Fulthorp born 23rd July 1809 with a christening on the 03 September 1809 at Whickham, County Durham. Father given as John Fulthorp and mother Jane Smart. In the Joiner Marriage index John Fulthorp married Jane Smart in Whickham on the 19th May 1788.

All of the above is research only and I do not have the documentation at the moment to prove it.

My third avenue of research is Robert Sancaster born 1872 son of Robert and Emily Sancaster. Why am I looking for him, because if he had children his line will be the senior Sancaster line but I can find little information regarding Robert. He appears in the 1881 census age 9 and again on the 1891 census living with his parents in Tenby age 19. After that nothing, I cannot find a birth certificate, marriage certificate or death certificate he has just disappeared. I suspect that he did not have children as nobody has come forward from his line.

I thought that maybe he was like Emily, Robert's "daughter" who was in fact his brothers daughter but brought up by him and his wife. So I looked for something similar. Strangely enough a Robert Lancaster Armstrong (a child of Elizabeth Armstrong (Sancaster)? I thought) was registered about the right time but by checking following few Census' it does not fit.

Has anybody any idea what happened to him.

Where did Robert go?
