Notes for William Norton:

The Obion County Norton's trace their heritage to John Norton who befriended King Charles II of England while he was off the throne and in France. John Norton and his family either migrated to England or came from France with King Charles. In the 500's the Norton's were in Italy and became NORIULE when entering France in the 1200's.

John Norton, born in England, married the daughter of Colonel George Lane. Their son John Norton Sr., born in 1678 in Baltimore Co., MD, died 3 April 1727 in England and is buried Center Aisle, St. Olaf's, London, England. His first wife is unknown; he married, second, Elizabeth Butler.

John Norton Sr., and his first wife had two sons, William Norton, b.1695 Baltimore Md who married Elizabeth Clark 1 Feb 1722; and upon her death married. Ann Horning. His second son, John Norton Jr. was born about 1695 in Baltimore Md and his wife's name was Jane.

Notes for Elizabeth Norton:

According to Katherine B. Alexander -- a descendant of Adoniram Patterson -- Adoniram owned nine hundred acres of land and nine slaves. Nicholas Norton, father of Elizabeth Norton Patterson, is described as a doctor, not a minister. This account can also be found in the above mentioned book, as well in other histories of Alexander County. It appears likely that the father of Elizabeth was in fact a doctor, while a brother also named Nicholas was a minister.

In the 1860 Federal census, Prude and Sallie Johnson, the twin daughters of daughter Laura Patterson Johnson, are enumerated with Adoniram Patterson. Also enumerated with Adoniram Patterson was M. A. Long, age 27, female, a tailor, who may have been a daughter of Malinda (Matilda?) Patterson Long, sister of Adoniram.

This couple lived on a plantation on the South Yadkin River. In 1860, they had hundreds of acres and 9 slaves. They had 11 children." [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]
