A similar drawing by M. M. Travis (see his website via the 'links' page) was done as the frontispiece for the third edition
(August, 1924) only. It was not a professional piece of work, and Dr. Shadduck commissioned F. W. Alden to replace it.
His drawing appeared in the fourth through tenth editions only (September, 1924 - 1944). It is a satire on an identical
sculpture, sans angel, by Carl Akeley, a noted taxidermist, which was on display at West Side Unitarian Church in Manhattan. "The
Chrysalis" was given widespread publicity in its day. The church has long since been torn down, and the sculpture's
whereabouts are unknown.
