Lock Flow Drills
Lock Flow drills allow repetition , feeling the "ins" and "outs" of the holds, and what it is like to receive them. They are borrowed from many of the Asian arts like Judo, Jui-Jitsu, Silat, Kali and etc. The important thing is to familiarize oneself with their applications and counters, then incorporating them into your repertoire of techniques.
We practice both hands on both partners. When both are comfortable with the techniques, open play with lock, counter, lock can be pursued.

1.  Hand/Wrist Lock: Hand is grasped with the same side as partner, on top of hand with the thumb crossing the back of the hand covering towards the pinky of the target. The hand is rotated outside locking the wrist, elbow and shoulder. Can be used in conjunction with a pull or drag to facilitate a throw. Also useful when disarming with a fingers vs. thumb opening of the hand.  Captured arm tends to want to contract and resist with counter rotation.

2.  Hand/Wrist Non-axial downward pressure. (By non-axial, I mean against the normal axis of movement of the joint) If arm contracts, let it. Follow counter rotation and guide elbow to a horizontal position. With wrist and elbow bent, apply downward pressure on the wrist joint forcing opponent down.

3.  Hand/Wrist Compression. With arm still bent, slide other arm inside elbow and hold the back of the arm at the triceps. Compress the wrist by pushing on the top of the hand and steadying or pulling the triceps in. Opponent may resist motion by extending arm…

4.  Straight-arm and Straight Hand/Wrist Lock. Slide hand back so that both hands control both sides of target hand. Holding hand/wrist in the perpendicular position apply non-axial downward pressure against the wrist. As in #2 the opponent goes down.

5.  Hammer/Wrist Compression Lock with Arm Bent.  Same side hand palm up, grabs thumb to thumb. With the other hand pull elbow down and pivot the bent hand up and inside, close to your body. Apply downward pressure to compress the joint. With arm tucked up against your body between you, one can strike with the free hand, or brace against the neck, face and head. Opponent may fight compression by straightening arm…

6.  Straight-arm Elbow Break. Outside hand peels back the fingers and hand of target arm, pulling out and down straightening it. The hand that was holding the lock in #5 releases and pressures up to lock out the elbow of target arm.

7.  Straight-arm Double Hand Finger Lock. (Or the “live long and prosper” lock) After the Elbow Break in #6, slide both hands down to grasp the fingers target palm facing down. Lift up and bend fingers out palm now facing out. Go to 8 or 9…

8.  Pinky Lock with Straight-arm Shove. Release the thumb side and rotate the pinky fingers down and under, straightening the elbow. Reinforce the elbow and shove the shoulder towards the face and head.

9.  Inverted Elbow Wrist Rotation Inward. Holding the thumb and fingers of the thumb side, rotate out and down. This should bring the elbow up and flex the wrist. Reach around inside and grab the edge of the hand and pull/rotate inward towards the opponent. Rotating the wrist can cause the rotation can cause the target to walk the direction of rotation. One can step on foot or trip leg of target for varied effects.

10.  Reverse Hammer Lock Compression of Wrist. Hold on to edge of hand, release thumb.  And bring elbow down and reinforce by grabbing your own forearm.

11.  Figure 4 Arm Lock. Reinforcing Arm grabs wrist with hand palm up. Pivot and anchor a figure four arm lock.
12.  Shoulder Lock with Elbow Elevation. Release and Extract the supporting arm from the figure four lock. Reinsert it above the bicep muscle going toward the back of the target, keeping the target hand under your armpit. Loop arm under the elbow and crank it upwards. Outside arm can support shoulder. Target may resist by straightening the arm.

13.  Straight-arm Figure 4 Elbow Lock. As arm straightens, slide back towards elbow and grab reinforcing arm grabbing shoulder.

14.  Shoulder Lock with Elbow Down. If target bends or twists arm to resist, take outside arm and elbow down on crook of captured arm's elbow and wrap under from the back, under to the chest.

15.  Inverted Straight-arm, Bent Wrist Lock. Slide out to straight-arm and grab wrist. Rotate and invert arm, lock wrist with palm facing target. Kick to keep distance. Can break elbow with downward force applied, i.e. elbow, armpit with drop, arm bar to step over and crank, etc.

16.  Pinky Twist to Inverted Elbow and Wrist Lock. Rotate the pinky out and down, inverting the elbow. Twist and reach inside and around to grab thumb, then rotate.

17.  Thumb Twist to Hammer Lock with Elbow down. Like #5
