Effects: Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere, Boss D5 delay pedal, Boss graphic equalizer pedal (all for electric playing only)
Amps: A Stevie Ray Vaughan devotee, Mayer uses a Fender Vibro King for his electric playing, but his live shows are primarily about acoustic guitar playing, for which he goes ampless, running his Martin into an Avalon U5 Class A direct box and straight into the pa system.

It has a really, really clean, amazing boost and a little eq and thats it, Mayer says. I think flange and acoustic never should have gone together, distortion and acoustic never should have gone together. The acoustic guitar is done, which is the beauty of it. When you pick up an electric guitar, you are picking up a modular piece of equipment with 8,000 ports. An acoustic guitar is done. Pick it up and play it.

Tattoos

John has (that we know of) 4 tatoos. On is the numbers 77, the year he was born, on the left side of his chest. He also has a tatoo of a Koi fish on his arm. The other tatoo, a pretty recent one, is 3 boxes forming a rectangle w/ a flower in the middle. And a blue design on the box furthest down his arm. One of his more recent tatts ,featured above, are the words Home Life on the back of both arms (home on his left, life on his right)  (I apologize if I've gotten any of the facts wrong) I've also seen a tattoo on his left arm reading SRV (Stevie Ray Vaughn).
