The National Medical University of Mongolia
(NMUM) was organized in 1942 as the Medical Faculty of the Mongolian State University. In
1961 the Medical Faculty was separated from the Mongolian State University and renamed as
the Mongolia State Medical Institute. Late in 1990 this institution was reorganized into
the National Medical University of Mongolia. NMUM provides the highest medical
education in Mongolia. The university has the following six faculties: medicine,
pediatrics, traditional medicine, public health, pharmacy and dentistry. Courses are open
to the secondary school graduates, and last for the three groups for six years and five
years and for he others. NMUM has a University central clinical hospital, national
center for anthropology, school of nursing, Medical College in Gobi-Altai and Dorngobi
aimak, Medical Central Library and center research laboratory. NMUM has 310
academic staff. 40% of the academic staff have advanced degrees in their respective
disciplines and more than 50 per cent are young teachers under of 35. Since its
establishment,the NMUM has been the one and only higher medical institution in Mongolia
and has educated 6571 general practitioners, 69 traditional medicine doctors, 1837
pediatricians, 715 hygienists, 701 dentists, 561 pharmacists, totalling 10454 higher
educated medical from postgraduated courses in NMUM.
