Reviews (Season 1)
Episode #1: The Buddha's Bowl
What a well-written episode! The dialogue is excellent and the story is simple enough. Both Tia and Christien shine in this episode, which has a perfect blend of action and comedy. All-in-all this episode makes for a superb pilot. I did, however, think it was slightly silly to have the spirit of the Buddha appear in such a 'human-like' form because it's simply unbelievable!
RATING: 9/10
Episode #2: The Smoking Gun
A simple episode but enjoyable nevertheless! There are some great comedy moments in this episode like Sydney implying that Nigel and her could share the shower to save time! You could almost imagine Sydney telling Nigel to budge up on the toilet seat so that they could excrete together! There are also other funny moments such as when Sydney returns to the 'posh' hotel completely covered in dirt much to disgust as the people there. And let's not forget the ending, where the hotel receptionist sees the so-called married couple with different partners!
The actions isn't bad either... you get plenty of high-kicks from Sydney... and the scene when Sydney goes head-to-head with a self-firing gun looks remarkably similar to a level in Tomb Raider 4. That damn Lara Croft is such a copycat! Hehe!
RATING: 9/10
Episode #3: The Headless Nun
OK, this will never be the most memorable 'Relic Hunter' episode, and it is slightly lacking in the action department. However, it did have an interesting storyline, and there was a cool, spooky feel during the middle of the episode.
There were good comedy moments, as well, such as- Nigel coming out of the shower to find the sexy nun had entered! And let's not forget his rather hopeless attempts to abseil down the side of a cliff!
The mystery as to who set fire to the convent wasn't too badly done either... I had my bets on the moody nun!
RATING: 6/10 (Not bad just lacking some of the ingredients that make up a classic 'Relic Hunter' episode)
Episode #4: Flag Day
Before I start reviewing this episode, can I just ask was it me or did that waitress bear a striking resemblance to Dee from 'Neighbours'?!
Now, about the episode, which is a likeable little number. Admittedly, there are some boring scenes with lots of talking- however, the story has been well-thought out and there's a great fight scene in the middle of the episode- in which Sydney beats up a bunch of troublemakers in the street. The slow-motions parts are cool, here!
A superb comedy moment in the episode is when Sydney and Nigel are trapped in the mine and very painstakingly carry some explosive chemicals to blow up the blocked entrance. After much sweat, and careful steps, they place down the chemicals... step back... throw a stone at the chemicals... close their eyes... and... and... Oh nothing happens! Hehe!
And let's not forget the last laugh with Claudia getting her revenge on Sydney! I won't tell you what she does in case you have yet to see it!
RATING: 7/10
Episode #5: Thank You Very Much
This episode would've been an average one if it hadn't been for two great scenes- the launderette scene and the snake pit!
After breaking into some important building, and narrowly getting back out, Sydney, Nigel and some big guy run for shelter in a launderette. However, the mean guy in the launderettes is only willing to let them stay unless they wash their clothes. So, the three of them have to strip to their underwear right in the middle of the launderette. You just gotta praise the people that always find a new way of showing Sydney in her lacy lingerie! Whoah! Yeah!
And as for the 'snake pit' scene... scary or what? I'm not particularly frightened of the slithery creatures but there were HUNDREDS! And I heard Tia found it very hard to shoot... apparently, the snakes kept jumping and biting their minders- and there were only TWO minders! Hehe!
RATING: 7/10 (Oh I think I forgot to mention that Sydney is looking for Elvis' guitar in this episode! Sorry!)
Episode #6: Diamond in the Rough
Ah- here's an episode I liked a lot! It's amazing actually how much action they managed to squeeze in one hour! As well as comedy! This episode has it all!
The basic storyline is that Sydney and Nigel go looking for a baseball glove- believed to make the wearer play great baseball! It has been brought to their attention by a young and rather arrogant baseball player, who wants it to better his failing career. So, off Sydney and Nigel go on their search for the glove- solving clues left by the boy, who thieved the glove years ago, and avoiding Sydney's past lover and rival Relic Hunter- Reiner. Oh, and some other baddie that pops up toward the end! Don't worry Sydney chucks a ball at his head really hard and knocks him out! Hehe- I did love that scene!
The ending is good, too- it has a moral!
RATING: 9/10
Episode #7: Transformation
Probably my favourite episode of the season- if only for the female mud wrestling, at the end! 'Transformation' sees Sydney Fox recruited by a Pentagon fella to uncover the lost scrolls of the alchemists, before evil-doers get their hands on them. The episode is well-filmed and well-written, and has a fast-paced storyline with twists and the right balance of action and humour. For the action-lovers, there's a brilliant fight scene in the outside-bar not to mention the already-mentioned mud wrestling scene! Hehe! And for comedy lovers, there's Nigel nearly setting off a land-mine! Oh and also that mud-wrestling scene, which is pretty funny as well!
There's also a strange special effect toward the end of the episode- where Sydney and that Pentagon guy come face-to-face with this watery black thing in the sky, and go inside it to find the scrolls. Good effect, but how it came to be there and what it was- I cannot say!
RATING: 10/10
Episode #8: Etched in Stone
And from one extreme to another, this episode was probably one of the worst episodes of the season. In this relic hunting trek, that annoying guy that calls Sydney sweetcheeks, and reminds me of my equally annoying friend, pops up again requesting Sydney's help to find a valuable piece of rock- I think! You see, the problem with this episode is that it's too bland. And it's a shame really because the scene, in which Sydney and Nigel shed their clothes and make their way through a nudist pool, was very funny- if only the rest of the episode had been better!
RATING: 4/10 (Even the fight scenes were unexciting!)
Episode #9: The Book of Love
A nice little episode- though strictly a comedy one and not for the action-lovers! 'The Book of Love' sees a studmuffin sporting celebrity requiring Sydney's help to find... wait for it... Cassanova's book of guaranteed amazing-satisfaction love-making techniques! Whoah! That's a mouthful! Obviously, Sydney is not too keen at first, but very soon she herself cannot resist the temptation to sneak a peak at naughty, naughty little book.
It's an entertaining episode and has some of the best comedy moments of the season. Such as- Nigel accidently revealing he reads a porno magazine called- 'Lusty, Leather Blondes' and then covering up by saying- "I've heard it's particuarly vulgar!" Not to mention the end of the episode when after finding out that Nigel has been painfully experimenting with the book, and that Sydney has been having a good ol' read of the book too, we find Claudia secretly hiding the book under a magazine!
RATING: 8/10 (Very funny- it was just the corny fight scenes and the way the book got stolen, retrieved, stolen... that let it down!)
Episode #10: Myth of the Maze
Here's an episode, which I call a 'classic' Relic Hunter episode because it has all the ingredients, which make up 'Relic Hunter' and all in the right quantities! There's action, there's humour, there's adventure!
And in this particular 'classic' Relic Hunter episode, Sydney and Nigel travel to Greece, where they meet up with... drum roll please... CLAUDIA! Yes, that's right! Claudia gets her fair share of the action, too! So, off the trio go in Greece looking for a ball of thread! Well, not just any ball of thread... a golden ball of thread, which leads the way through the minotaur's maze! It is in this maze that they discover the truth behind the minotaur of ancient Greek mythology and stop a greedy tycoon, who wants to tell the world about the maze... and inevitably make money from it, too!
A great episode, indeed!
RATING: 10/10
Episode #11: The Irish Crown Affair
Two-in-a-row! Hehe! Yes, this is another 'classic' Relic Hunter episode! In 'The Irish Crown Affair', Sydney, Nigel, some old friend of Sydney (a cute little blonde) and two other guys go looking for a crown that will clear a family's name! It's sounds complicated but it's not really... just hard to explain in a couple of words! So, just take my word for it... this episode is great! It has the right balance of action and comedy, and is one of those episodes that you would want a new-comer to the series to watch first!
RATING: 10/10 (A well-written episode... and the Irish setting worked well! Top of the morning to ya, laddie!)
Episode #12: Emperor's Bride
I liked this episode a lot! Not only did it have a very funny theme running through the episode- which was Sydney and Nigel's relationship, but it had two of Sydney's past-lovers desperately trying to beat her at finding the corpse of a Chinese princess and the spectacular necklace she was buried with.
The location of the episode was interesting, too. Unlike where you would expect, Sydney and Nigel searched for the corpse in Alaska, where the body was washed up. Although the fact that they found the corpse in an underground water cavern in a cave in a forest (which looked very similar to the forest in 'Run Sydney Run') was a little bit... um... strange! Hehe.
'Emperor's Bride' also boasted a great fight scene at the end... with Sydney fighting this huge, mean woman! I mean, Sydney was getting her ass whipped at first! However, with a conveniently place springy tree, Sydney managed to save the day!
RATING: 10/10
More reviews coming soon! Hey, I need to save some episodes to watch or my evening's will be empty!
