Relic Hunter Articles
Perfect for bed-time reading, read what the journalists have to say about RH!
Wow! Someone really likes 'Relic Hunter'! I was just scanning the net and I came across this article. I think it's compiled by an Asian writer, who feels empowered when watching the show! <- I think a lot of people can relate to that. Click here to read it:
Millennium Woman
Wonder Woman… Xena, the princess warrior… and now Relic Hunter? Is this where new-age television is heading?
Like tomb-raider without the frustration, Tia Carrere is Sydney Fox, a history professor with a difference. No, not just because she's drop dead gorgeous and wears figure-hugging blouses! But because- at the drop of a penny- she's flying to another country on the search of ancient artefacts and nice-looking jewels. She's a relic hunter/tomb raider and a very good one at that! In fact, the name 'Sydney Fox' is well renowned among strange-looking men that claim to be history buffs, dealers and museum-workers. And so far, she's managed to, taking slight historical liberties, uncover sceptres, swords, baseball gloves and… the guitar of 'The King' himself.
So, what is it about this series that makes it more compulsive viewing than the been-there-done-that 'Young Indiana Jones' series? Could it really be because the lead is a female? Well, let's face it, the eye-candy doesn't go a miss but is it just pure and simply refreshing to see a strong female character rather than the ever so cliché brawny, muscular male?
Xena, Charlie's Angels and Tomb Raider were all phenomenal successes this decade- with the latter two being massive box-office hits. And according to Lucy Lawless, who played Xena, the key to their success has been that the lead is appealing to everyone- whatever age or gender. "She's a role-model to the women" explains Lucy, "And the guys feel this is a woman they can take to the bar and have a drink and a laugh with! That's where the character's appeal comes from"
She's probably right. I can turn on a show like 'Xena' or 'Relic Hunter' and whilst my beau admires the character's bravery and feistiness, I can sit back and admire… um… other things!
In a recent interview, Tia Carrere admitted that the character of Sydney Fox is a role model even to herself. Coming from Hawaii, this is the woman that was once afraid of dirt! However, she has now had to put herself in more than the occasional uncomfortable situation to play the role but says she strives to be as brave as Sydney. Trust me, Tia, you're one of the bravest women I know! Snake pits, sandpits, muddy forests, murky waters are to name a few of the unpleasant places her character has lead her in!
Nevertheless, as the third season comes to completion, the future looks bright for Tia and 'Relic Hunter'. And I reckon that she's just one of the hard-hitting, tough-cookie female characters we'll be seeing on our screens this year! Woo-hoo!
