  • WebSite Abstraction - Helpful resource for various Webmaster freebies: JavaScript, graphics and Web tools. There's also a good Microsoft FrontPage tutorial and lots of annotated links to other Web page building resources.
  • NetMechanic - This free service is a must for Webmaster. The site features various robots that will comb your site for broken links, locate bad HTML tags and rate your server's response time.
  • Bravenet.com - This wonderful site offers loads of free services for your Web site. For one thing, they offer a free search engine that your visitors can use to search your site. (This is the only free local search engine we've seen). There's also guestbooks, Web forums, hit counters, E-mail forms, greeting cards and more. Many of these services are easy to set up. You don't need CGI-BIN access to implement them. And Bravenet.com hosts the services on their own server.
  • Jobvertise.com - This service allows you to easily add job listings to your site. Use their intuitive interface to add, edit or delete jobs listings on your Web site. They store the software and data on their servers, so there is no installation. Jobvertise is also customizable to match your existing Web site.
  • WebTechs Validation Service - Making sure your Web page is correctly coded can be a real challenge. That's where this service comes in. Here, you can submit your HTML document (or a portion of a document) and find out if it's correctly coded. This service will return a list of errors on your page and tell you what and where they are. You can also have this validator check for needless coding in your page, as well as remove script coding, as well as other options.
  • MrPost - This nifty service allows you to add E-mail, along with many other features, to your Web site for free. After creating a MrPost account, your visitors can login to use MrPost's extensive messaging features and be returned to your site upon exiting the MrPost environment. Upon registration, custom code will be generated for your Web site. Simply paste the code into your website, and your SiteHost account will be active.
  • Broadcaster - There are many places on the Web that'll help you promote your site, for free. This British site stands out, though, for its ability to quickly add your site to various "free-for-all" type sites across the Web. If you were to do these sites by hand, they'd take forever. ("Free-for-all" sites, surprisingly, do generate traffic, if you submit to enough of them, although I've never figured out who bothers to read them.) Broadcaster also sends you a report, showing you the various sites you've been submitted to and the results of each submission.
  • Swingout's Free Forum Networks - This site is offering free forums and bulletin boards. Easy to set up.
  • Web Site Garage - This is an essential site for "tuning up" your Web site. There are various utilities that will check your site's performance in areas such as load time, spelling, dead links, site popularity, correct HTML design and more. There's also a useful "GIF Lube" feature that lets you shrink the size of your site's images, so they'll load quicker.
  • Link-Me Banner/Reciprocal Links Exchange Database - One of the best ways to promote your site is through reciprocal links. This resource is a good place to start. This site also lists over 500 "free-for-alls," which are basically bulletin boards that you can add your site to (and believe it or not, they do pull in traffic).
  • InternetJump - This service is offering you the chance to have an easy-to-remember Web site address. For example: if your current address is www.teztrisp.com/ourusers/~directories/YourCompany.html, people will automatically jump to this site with either of these addresses: www.internetjump.com/YourCompany or Fast.to/YourCompany.
  • StellarSite Web Designs - Do you need help getting your page up and going? Check with these guys: they're a group of nonprofit volunteers who provide free custom graphics and HTML design.
  • Survey Lab - This is a Web-based application that automates the entire creation and administration of online surveys and lets you access results instantly from the convenience of your browser. No software to install, no need for custom programming, and no need for any daily administration.
  • EPage webmaster classified ads program - How'd you like to add classified ads to your Web site? You can, with this service. Webmasters can choose to mirror the full EPage Classifieds and/or AuctionPage.com auctions. In addition, you can create your own categories. The ads will be posted into EPage and Auctionpage where possible.
  • MyPostcards.com - This site enables you to add a free digital greeting card service to your Web site; something that's bound to enhance your page's appeal with visitors.
  • ClickTrade - This service allows you to reward other Web site owners for linking to your site. Here, you may be either an "advertiser" or a "link partner." As an advertiser you reward link partners on a pay-per-click basis for linking to your site. As a link partner you earn revenue for sending traffic to advertiser sites.
  • Event calendars - This site offers free scripts for generating HTML from your event descriptions. The output is a nicely formatted calendar (HTML table) ready for saving and uploading to your Web site.
  • A Kinder, Gentler HTML Validator - Writing HTML is so easy that a child could do it (many do). However, writing correct, accurate HTML is a tougher task that can challenge even seasoned Web authors. If you've built a Web page and want to make sure it's error-free, then click over to this free service. It will check your page and tell you if you've got errors and where they are.
  • Dr. Watson - This is a free service that not only checks for coding errors on your Web page, it also checks for that great bane of Web authoring: broken links.
  • Rank This! - This is an online tool to help you determine your "ranking" on different keyword sets in 8 of the major search engines. Rank This! tells you not only if your site is in the top 200 results, but also lists the sites that are in the top 10 on that search. There's also a guide for helping you improve your rankings.
  • Free DNS service - This unique, free service is for people who administer their own machines that are directly connected to the Net with a dedicated IP address. If you connect to the Net via an ISP you will probably have an odd machine name like modem23.remote.ny.com. With the Free DNS you can give your computer a more normal name like mycomp.ml.org.
  • Web Tutor - If you're new at designing Web pages, you really need to check out this outstanding tutorial, which you can download and then view in your browser, off-line. It'll teach you everything you need to know about building a Web site, from the basics to frames to forms to frames and more.
  • Inspector Web - If you run a Web site, you've no doubt run into the problem of keeping your links current. If this has been a hassle for you, check out this site, which offers a free service to check your site's URLs. After checking your links, (up to 800 under the free service) Inspector Web creates an HTML report, and notifies you by E-mail.
  • HTML Reference Library - This is an essential free tool for learning HTML. The HTML Reference Library is a Windows Help file, that details with numerous screenshots and examples and all of the currently supported HTML elements.
  • MyTimer.com - This is a revolutionary new service to help you analyze your Web traffic. It tells you how long people have viewed your site. (helpful if you're wondering if people are just whizzing by your site or are spending significant time there).
  • WebPromote's Meta tag builder - If you have a Web site, then you need to have "Meta tags" on your page to get the best placement on the search engines. This free service will build optimized Meta tags for you, based on the details of your site that you provide.
  • Free Code - Lots of coding goodies here that are written in C/C++, Java, Perl or Visual Basic that are compatible with Unix and/or Windows. Categories include CGI, chat, E-mail forms, HTML, Internet protocols, online applications, user interface components and Web hosting tools.
  • Net Forum - This site is offering free message boards for your site. To administer the boards, they're using the WebBBS system. The service is paid for by advertising banners.
  • Dream Catchers CGI Scripts - Great resource for freeware CGI scripts. These CGI scripts are made available to Web designers, servers, programmers, and anyone else who can find a use for them free of charge by Dream Catchers Technologies, Inc. Scripts include a message board, menu, advertiser tracking, counter, guestbook, rotating link, etc.
  • javElink - A useful new site, javElink offers a Web page change monitoring service. The first 20 pages are free. With javElink, you can check on pages in a few seconds; monitor how much a specific page is changing; link directly to pages that contain new information and know daily whether your favorite Web pages have changed.
  • Recommend-It.Com - This service offers a good way for you to build traffic on your Web site. Just sign up and then you may place their link on your Web site. When your visitors click on that link, they can quickly and easily recommend your site to their friends.
  • Inside the Web Free Message Boards - This service allows you to quickly and easily set up a free interactive message board for your Web site. You also are allowed to administer your board (delete messages, set options, etc.) You don't need CGI access----all you gotta do is sign up!
  • Matt's Script Archive - If you have CGI access with your Unix Web hoster, then you should check out this essential site that offers tons of free C++ and Perl CGI scripts. There's a lot of neat goodies here to spice up your Web site, including a message board, a search engine, a counter, a "free-for-all" links page, a form mailer, an HTTP cookie library, a random image displayer, a random image generator, a text clock and much more.
  • Bobby online analyzer for Web pages - Bobby is a free Web-based service that will help you make Web pages accessible to people with disabilities. It will also find HTML compatibility problems that prevent pages from displaying correctly on different Web browsers.
  • Crunchie - If you build Web pages, this next freeware utility, Crunchie, is useful for 2 reasons: it compresses your HTML coding, so your pages may load slightly faster. Crunchie also squeezes your coding together, which can help discourage HTML theft. Our only problem with Crunchie is that it sometimes runs bits of text together, so you should be careful using it.
  • Come.To - A Web page URL redirection service that lets you have a nifty, short, easy-to-remember Web site address such as travel.to/myco. This service is free, provided that you place their icon on your page. Note: once in a while, their service goes down briefly, which can result in lost traffic for you.
  • Unix Shell providers - This site offers a number of free Unix Shell providers.
  • WebScripts (free Perl CGI scripts) - This site offers several quality free CGI scripts: Web Log (a log analyzer tool); WebTests (a site management tool); WebLibs (which allows you to set up "stories" on your site which visitors can complete by "filling in the blanks; " WebBBS (a quality Web bulletin board); and more.
  • Virtual Colony - Great collection of free sounds and MIDI files for your Web pages and computer (PCs, Macs and Sun/Next files included). User MIDI primer, as well. (Linkback required)
  • CGI Free - Got a Web site, but no CGI script access? Then check out this service. CGI Free offers free CGI hosting. Features include browser redirection, random images, a form mailer, random quotes, "countdown," animation, clock, slideshow, random link, menu direction and text date.
  • VisitWeb - Free URL redirection service that alleviates the need for potential visitors to your site having to remember long and exacting URL's. Visitors can use easy-to-remember words and phrases as pointers to your site.
  • The Reciprocal Link Database - This service aims to help Webmasters find other sites to reciprocate links with. This site is new, so if you submit now, you can get better positioning.
  • InfoLink Freeware link checker - This freebie program has all the tools necessary to help maintain your site. With the extensive set of reports built after each verification, you can easily locate and correct problem links and pages, and you can utilize the statistic reports to keep a log of your site's integrity.
  • Did-It Detectives Search Engine - Useful service that keeps you informed about your Web site's submission status by checking the major search sites to see if it has been indexed. If you're trying to promote your Web site, this service can save you a lot of legwork (clickwork?). Warning: we've had complaints from visitors that this site sends spam to those who use it (although that was not our own experience). In any case, it's always a good idea to protect yourself against spam.
  • URL-Minder - Your own personal Web robot - Do you wish you could notify your visitors when the content on your pages changes? Then try out this service. Just register your page(s) with URL-Minder and they'll send you coding to place on your site, which produces a form. When your visitors enter their E-mail address in the form, then they'll automatically be notified anytime your page is updated.
  • Free Internet Server Monitor Service - This service will check your Web site, FTP site, E-mail address, etc. every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, to make sure they're up and functioning. Notification E-mail including error messages will be sent to you as needed.
  • Free Web site templates - You don't have to put a lot of work into having a great-looking Web page---Web Diner does the work for you! Just download some of the cool templates offered here.
  • Just 'n' Case Cartoons - This site offers free "G" rated cartoons for use on homepages, newsletters, brochures etc.
