  • Max Pages - A free Web page provider, Max Pages offers a number of goodies, including an automatic table of contents generator, a counter and lots of clipart (over 9,000 images). Note that Max Pages does not create true HTML files and their limit is expressed in pages, rather than megabytes. (You're allowed up to 50 pages). Note: Max Pages may advertise on your site, but you may not sell advertising space yourself. Your URL here will be: maxpages.com/yoursite.
  • Angelfire Communications - This major service offers free home pages with a 200-kilobyte limit on content. However, if you use graphics from their stock collection, they're not counted against your space limit. This service is paid for by sponsored banner ads. (Sadly, though, Angelfire has recently fall victim to the annoying trend of displaying "pop-up" ads on its members' sites.) You may advertise your business, but you may not have paid advertising banners on your page. Angelfire offers lots of helpful advice for getting you up and running with your own Web site, even if you're new to Web site authoring.
  • CommunityWare - Create your online profile here and get a free personal home page. You can create your homepage instantly using pre-designed templates or by picking various elements "a la cart." There's no HTML programming required.
  • CONKWorld - This speedy free Web page provider offers a refreshing change of pace: they display no ads on your site (although you're allowed to run ads yourself). You may use your Web space with them for any legal purpose, as long as it's not a porn site. With this service, you update your content via your browser, rather than by FTP. Note: CONKWorld works only with Netscape 3.x or higher and Internet Explorer 4.0; it does NOT work with IE 3.X), Your site address here will be: http://conk.com/world/yourname/
  • Crosswinds Internet Communications - These guys offer free personal Web pages and free E-mail. You may upload your page via FTP or with their upload service that you access through your browser. No porn, warez or spamming allowed. No size limits on accounts!
  • CyNet City Virtual Community - This "interactive community" offers free personal Web page hosting and E-mail. You get two megs of space, but can get 10 megs if you "run for office" and become a "City Official" (which can be any one of a number of positions, such as City Attorney, Librarian or Museum Curator, that involve taking on some responsibilities, such as overseeing online forums).
  • ForFree - This service offers free Web pages (up to two megs limit on content). They also feature free E-mail with full POP3/SMTP access.
  • Fortune City.com - Stake your claim at this cool service that uses a neat city theme. Each member of the "community" gets a whopping 6 megs of space for their Web site. Better hurry, space here is being snapped up quickly. Our only gripe with this service is that it is so popular that sometimes it takes a while to gain access to update your page.
  • FreeNation - Popular Hong Kong-based service that includes a generous 5 megabytes of free Web space, cgi services, SSI (server side includes), counters, guestbooks, random mime generators and many other features. They're temporarily not adding new members, but you can sign up and be notified when they're available again.
  • FreeTown - Free Web pages available ``for personal or commercial use, providing the content is legal and rated for general audiences.'' Has a Web page creator form that lets you build your page online.
  • GeoCities Free Web Pages - Among the biggest services of its type, GeoCities offers free Web pages and E-mail. You start out by staking your claim in a GeoCities "neighborhood" that offers pages with similar themes to yours. You then submit an application and are given a password for use in creating your own personal home page. You are then able to use GeoCities' file manager utility to create your home page. Or, you may submit your custom home page and GIFs/JPGs graphics files using the "EZ File Upload Utility." You can also upload your Web page and other files using an FTP client such as this. GeoCities has had some problems lately. Some of our visitors report access woes. The service has also introduced annoying "referral" ad pages that you have to click through to get to your site.
  • HowdyNeighbor.com - Free home pages. Two megabyte limit. You may not advertise the sale of any products and/or services on your site.
  • Hypermart - This service offers you 10 megs of space and "unlimited bandwidth" for your non-porn business-related Web site (no personal sites allowed). Hypermart offers you CGI-bin access and supports Microsoft Front Page extensions.
  • Internet the City Online - New service that gives you a personal Web site and an E-mail account (up to one meg in size both both).
  • Lombardia - This site offers free instant Web pages. There is no need to know HTML; just fill out a form and you're all set.
  • Ostriches On Line - Free home pages to worthy people and organizations. No commercial sites. They prefer small, (under 150K) heavily-used sites.
  • Phrantic's Trailerpark - Free home pages that you can create instantly with a "Free Homepage Generator," or you may upload your own custom creation.
  • QSL.Net (for Amateur Radio Operators only) - If you are a licensed Amateur Radio Operator you can get free space for a Web page at this service. They'll also provide you with free E-mail and full FTP capabilities.
  • Supernews - These guys offer a lot of bang for your buck (especially when you consider that you don't need any bucks to use this free service!). There's free Web hosting (and free E-mail) here. For non-profit organizations, they provide "Free Gold Level" Web site hosting (up to 100MB/month). Also offered in French, German and Spanish.
  • SureSite - This commercial Web host provider also offers free pages that you can set up by filling in a series of blanks, using their online "Web Publisher." This service is reasonably speedy, but you only get 50 kilobytes of space and you may only use graphics from their clip art collection (if you use your own images, there's a $50/year fee.) No porn, no spam and no "blatantly offensive" material allowed.
  • The Express Page - Get your free Web page here and you can design it online, even if you know nothing about HTML. Business-related pages are permitted.
  • Towne Square - Towne Square 2000 is a free on-line publishing system where you can create all sorts of Web pages -- without programming and without any HTML applications running. You can create Web pages just by using your browser. The first thing you need to do is get a good Web browser. A browser is an application with which you can view Web pages (you're using one right now). Towne Square 2000 recommends Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to take advantage of all of Towne Square's built-in interactivity.
  • Tripod free Web pages - Another major free Web page service that has unfortunately fallen victim to the trend of the annoying "pop-up" advertising button. You get two megabytes of space for your site. You have two options: if you're a beginner, you can use the "Quickpage" option if you want Tripod to write your page's coding. If you know HTML coding, you can do it yourself through the "Custom" option. Tripod offers lots of goodies, including an option to have your own chat room. There's also lots of help here on how to become a successful Web page author.
  • Web International - Another free Web page service. Personal home pages only; no commercial sites. You can build your page via their easy-to-use online page generator.
  • WebSpawner - WebSpawner is an online Web authoring system that lets you design and develop customized Web pages in a matter of minutes - without having to learn HTML. Once you have approved your web page it will be placed on the World Wide Web, at no cost to you.
  • Web Village - Get a free home page (personal home pages only; no commercial advertising allowed) and E-mail account; two meg limit. You may upload your pages via an FTP client.
  • Xoom - Xoom, the people noted for their extensive clipart collections, have started up a free Web page service. Here, you get five megs of space to build your personal or small business home page. You also get free clip art, CGI scripts, and much more.
