The 10^th Massachusetts

Volunteer Infantry Regiment

Maj. Alan Guditis, Commanding, Is now accepting recruits. VOLUNTEERS of good habits and 18 yrs. of age and older will be provided with instruction, drill and assistance in outfitting as private infantrymen. Boys under 18 yrs. may be accepted as musicians. Upon giving their oath, all may look forward to a very favorable period of service. The regiment will take the field in March instant.

Volunteers should be aware that the 10^th Regiments history dates back to 1639, with the establishment of the Springfield Train Band to protect Western Massachusetts from Indian raids. The unit, with various reorganizations, served with distinction in the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. At the onset of hostilities in 1861, companies were formed in the four western counties of Massachusetts in the following towns: Great Barrington, North Adams, Northampton, Pittsfield, Springfield, Greenfield, Shelburne Falls, West Springfield-Holyoke and Westfield.  Between 1861 and 1864, the 10^th sacrificed in excess of seven hundred of its one thousand members to death, wounds and disability. As part of the

VI Corps. Army of the Potomac, the 10^th Mass. Regt distinguished itself for its patriotic zeal and fighting ability. Fair Oakes. Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Chancelorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg are among the historic names upon its battle flag. To honor the memory of these deeds, the present day 10^th participates in parades, living history events, and patriotic observances.

All should know that the 10^th Regt is chartered by the Massachusetts Adjutant General as a heritage unit of the 104^th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts National Guard, Blue-Gray Division.
