ELIZABETH TAYLOR WHITAKER was born in the Cherokee Nation East, dau. of David and Mary Bigby Taylor. She attended school at the Candy's Creek Mission near present Cleveland, Tennessee. She fled with her parents to the North Carolina mountains. There she grew up and married Stephen Whitaker. They were rather prosperous landowners and he was a Captain of Thomas' Legion in the CSA army during the Civil War. It is a documented matter-of- fact that he was the last officer to surrender East of the Mississippi River.
