Mcghauey , Elijah Vaughn |
Elijah Vaughn McGhauey went home to be with Jesus March 15, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. We thank our god that Eli's battle was physical and not spiritual and he is sitting in God's Big Lap now. Eli was born on February 4, 1998 to Chuck McGhauey, Jr. and Michelle Vaughn in Fallon, Nevada. We knew the moment he was born that he was a special child. Lighting the room up with his warmth and love of people was a reflection of his sweet spirit that continued to remain with him through all his five years of life. Eli loved dressing up. Some of his favorite costumes were Spider Man, Batman, cowboy outfits (which by the way, he showed up fully chapped, red cowboy hat and cowboy boots to go and cut Christmas trees this past December). Eli never met a stranger. He would capture your heart in less than an hour if you spent time with him. Eli loved to be out in the garage wrenching with his daddy, grandpa and daddy's buddies. Eli enjoyed playing with his Hot Wheels, bicycle, and his electric motorcycle which he customized himself by painting it blue, even the mirrors and tires. Eli loved to fish and go up in the hills (which by the way, he told his grandpa that the family dog jumped out of the back of the truck, then with a twinkle in his eye said, "just kidding"). Each year he wanted to have his birthday party at the Pizza Parlor, and so his fifth birthday was celebrated with at least 200 people in attendance, lots of pizza, soda and was treated to a Harley Davidson motorcycle ride. Eli loved his Black Labrador puppy, Princess. Eli's favorite foods were Chicken Chow Mein from Wong's, broccoli and cheese, fried shrimp, crab, steak, eggs with mushrooms, sausage and sauerkraut, corn dogs from Scotty's and mushroom sandwiches from the UC Davis cafeteria. He tried his hand at baking, driving the beaters around the mixing bowl and licking the batter bowl clean. Eli loved preschool with Art being his favorite subject. Eli's sweet spirit and twinkling eyes were always captured in his photographs. He leaves to cherish his memories, his mom and dad, great grandparents, grandparents, numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. |

McGill, Rulan K. Waite |
Rulan Waite McGill who was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant in Reno (or Sparks) last week was a former resident of Hawthorne. She attended school here the last half of the fourth grade and the entire fifth grade when her mother taught in the local school system, January 1957 through June 1958. Rulan’s teachers were Lucy Phelps in the fourth and margaret Oakland in the fifth grade. At the time of her death Mrs. McGill was employed as a teacher at Albert M. Lowry High School in Winnemucca. She had been visiting her mother and step-father in Fallon, and she had gone to Reno for the day on a shopping epedition. Her mother, Kathleen Waite (Porteous), taught special education classes during her tunsure in Hawthorne and a number of her former students are still in the community. She had become an author after leaving Hawthorne, and a few years ago she returned to this general area to teach in Gabbs. She married James Porteous and moved to Fallon. nd 19 Jul 1979 A funeral was held Tuesday, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Winnemucca for Rulan K. McGill, Rulan K. Waite |
Story Written By: Kay austie and Marc Keyser-cooper. For Photo email Cactusgem Rulan McGill was a teacher in Winnemucca. She taught sophomore english at the local high school. Teaching anything to high school students is not easy, but teaching english to sophomores is especially hard. It’s not every student’s favorite subject. Rulan liked her job. She was very good...hard-working and dedicated but more than that. She seemed to have a quiet but profound effect on her young students. More than good english and grammar she gave her students personal help and concern that will be remembered. 10, 20, 30 years later. Someone at the high school said, "she was known for her quiet attitude with students and her ability to listen to their problems, in short she was one of Winnemucca’s finest teachers." One student said, "she was a good teacher. She always listened to our problems." Another student commented, "I did really well in that class because she was so good." Mrs. McGill had found her profession in life and she was a success. There is not Pulitzer prize for a teacher who makes an outstanding contribution to humanity. No great wealth, no instant fame. Teaching is not the quick road to stardom. One reason a teacher’s efforts are not immediately recognized is because those efforts are directed at helping young people grow up. The influence and effect a teacher has on the lives of her students may be tremendous, but it’s like a planting a vineyard..it takes years for the harvest. Rulan McGill died last month in Reno, the victim of a senseless violent crime. She was only 32 years old. She was a wife and mother, a dedicated teacher, and a member of the local LDS Church. She was a fine and caring person. Please help apprehend the murderer of Mrs. Rulan McGill highschool teacher. Contribute to the reward fund account at the First National Bank of Nevada, Fallon.
