Hi! It's me, Rei, again. I'm here to talk about Usagi in the manga. Lots of things have changed in the transition between the manga and the anime.
Usagi stumbled over a cat on her way to school one day, and later she started speaking, telling Usagi about her alter ego as Sailormoon. The first mission was very similar to the anime, as Usagi's best friend Naru's mother turned into a monster. Sailormoon, obviously, overcame that evil though.
Naru never played a big role in the plot of the manga, but she appeared more. And she hardly got attacked by youma. And on top of that, she didn't disappear that much, like the way she disappeared in the anime during Sailorstars.
Well, we both met the same way in both manga and anime. I mean-- I mistook her for an evil force both times, and I threw an ofuda at her. Other than me, she found the other three senshi quite quickly. First Ami, then me, then Makoto, then Minako. Minako had a more prominent role and was of more importance in the manga, and she had more superiority tha us other three.
Another major change is the fact that Chiba Mamoru-san isn't as old in the manga, but just by one or two years. He goes to Moto Azabu High school, and he's a junior. Whereas in the anime, he's older (think 19-20), going to college, and doesn't seem exactly appropriate for Usagi's age. Another change with Mamoru is the fact he gets premonitions, sensing things by touch. Like fond memories when he touches certain objects. I'm bringing this up, because he was as close to Usagi is as in the anime. And, I didn't go out with him initially like I did in the anime. So I didn't feel bad when their destiny was revealed to each other.
Well, Usagi's, and Sailormoon's, first mission was to get the ginzuishou. In the manga it was retrieved when Sailormoon's tear crystalized. She later had it made into a necklace courtesy of her father Kenji. To make a long story short, Tuxedo Kamen was captured by the Dark Kingdom, and we all decided to go to the moon to look for answers... then things came back like in the anime. Tuxedo Kamen, or Endymion, turned evil, and Princess Serenity, or Sailormoon, saved him.
It wasn't tough though. Usagi killed herself when she realized Tuxedo Kamen was dead. And then, Venus decided we should use our henshin pens to help stop Queen Metallia, the mastermind behind Queen Beryl (killed by Venus), and the Dark Kingdom itself. Then we died, but we were revived for the first time too. Sailormoon eventually defeated Queen Metallia. More dramatic events happened in the manga.
Yes, a happy reuinion with Tuxedo Kamen and Sailormoon! Usagi, out of all of us, felt the most relieved when we had completed our first really major mission. We had a chance to finally relax... but little did we know (and you probably guessed) we weren't halfway through our adventures.
And then, a strange little girl appeared while Mamoru and Usagi were kissing at the park. She claimed she was Usagi, and her hair was very much like Usagi's: in odangos. Mamoru dubbed her "Chibiusa." Her first encounter with Usagi was the same as in the anime: she pointed a toy gun to Usagi's head. She pulled the trigger, and... did Usagi die?! Nah, flowers popped out. What a way to cause instant shock and potential seizure.
Usagi still had the same problems with Chibiusa; Chibiusa hypnotized her family into believing she was Usagi's cousin, and Chibiusa acted very spoiled. Then the new enemy arrived, and I got abducted first. On top of that, Motoki figured out our alter-ego's (except for me, as I was abducted.) Soon Mercury and Jupiter were abducted by the strange new enemy, traveling in a UFO.
Well, Chibiusa came looking for the ginzuishou also, like in the anime. She quickly found out about our identities as Sailor Senshi. Usagi was annoyed, but surprised at the fact that Chibiusa actually respected her. Although one time Chibiusa stole Usagi's brooch, even though she gave it back.
Usagi, Chibiusa, Mamoru, and Minako went to the future, with the help of Sailorpluto, the senshi of time and death. They met Diana and discovered Chibiusa was Usagi's and Mamoru's daughter. And in a battle with some droids, Sailormoon was captured by Dimondo, lured in by the other three Sailor Senshi. The Wiseman, the mastermind, turned Chibiusa into Black Lady, and eventually Black Lady realized she had friends in the world. Black Lady was, after all, the product of despair. But the three captured senshi escaped, however. Well, eventually Sailorpluto stopped time as to stop Dimondo and Saffir.
Black Lady was healed after Sailorpluto died, as she stopped time. After that Chibiusa turned into an actual senshi, Sailorchibimoon. With the help of both of the ginzuishous, retrieved by Pluto's sacrifice, Sailormoon and Sailorchibimoon defeated the last evils, the Nemesis and the Death Phantom.
And soon after, things would be back to... normal?! Neo-Queen Serenity sent a letter to Sailormoon explaining that Chibiusa needed training... and that Chibiusa has to stay with Usagi a little while longer. As if Usagi didn't have enough problems already...! Well, at least Sailormoon got new powers from Neo-Queen Serenity. We all went back to the past (present?) to fight evil once more.
And sure, if you have a little sense of Sailormoon, you'd know that by the third season in the anime, things didn't get any easier. The new enemy, the Death Busters appeared. Soon two new senshi, Sailoruranus and Sailorneptune appeared. Haruka, however, seemed to show more affection for Usagi, by flirting more, in the manga. She also got more annoyed with Chibiusa, who, literally has, "connections."
Well, the Outer Senshi caused more problems for Sailormoon, like in the anime. The Outers minus Saturn had the talismans, and the Death Busters didn't need to extract heart crystals like in the anime. And Uranus and Neptune initially attacked us, saying they weren't our allies. After all, they were legendary soldiers, guarding our solar system from enemies. They had a different mission from us in our previous incarnations, so we saw very little of them.
Also, the holy chalice didn't appear like in the anime. It was formed when Usagi, Chibiusa, and Mamoru gathered their hands and their energy. Then everyone else focused their energy. The only significance the three talismans had to it was in making it open. When it did open, all the other senshi received heart brooches. But Sailormoon also said the same phrase, "Crisis Make-Up," like in the anime to complete her two-stage tranformation into Supersailormoon.
The Outers wanted to stop the arrival of Sailorsaturn, by killing Hotaru. But Usagi wanted to find another way. Pretty soon, Hotaru changed into Mistress 9 from an implanted daimon egg within her, and she snatched the ginzuishou and soul from Chibiusa. Soon, Hotaru overcame Mistress 9's power, and she gave Chibiusa's soul back. And while we were battling a daimon, Sailorsaturn appeared. She defeated the daimon, but she also tried to destroy the world. However, Sailorpluto's power "Dark Dome Close" prevented this from happening, and Supersailormoon restored everything to normal again, by turning into Serenity. Hotaru was reincarnated into a baby, and Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna decided to raise her for a bit.
