ABC wins its third ratings week in a row

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC played games last week and came up a winner in the ratings, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

Scoring with football and ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,'' ABC averaged 16.8 million prime-time viewers (10.7 rating, 17 share) to ace the week -- the network's third consecutive victory.

Even so, second-place NBC claimed the most-watched show, ``ER,'' as well as fellow Thursday hits ``Will & Grace'' and ``Just Shoot Me'' in the Top 10 roster.

For the week, NBC had an average of 12.0 million viewers (8.1 rating, 13 share), while CBS had 11.4 million viewers (7.9 rating, 12 share) and Fox had 9.9 million viewers (6.2 rating, 10 share).

UPN had 3.6 million viewers (2.2 rating, 3 share), the WB had 3.4 million viewers (2.1 rating, 3 share), and Pax TV had 1.5 million viewers (1.0 rating, 2 share).

The big scoop for CBS: its dinner-hour newscast seized the runner-up slot for both total viewers and household ratings, sending ABC to the cellar. Excluding ties, it's been more than two years since ``The CBS Evening News'' took second place.

NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the race with an average of 11.9 million viewers (8.7 rating, 16 share), while CBS averaged 10.2 million viewers (7.6, 14). ABC's ``World News Tonight'' had 9.8 million viewers (7.5, 14).

A rating point represents 1,022,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 102.2 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
