THE NIELSENS
`Nightly News' doing nicely as year ends
ASSOCIATED PRESS
30-Dec-1999 Thursday
NEW YORK -- NBC's "Nightly News" is ending 1999 with
a strong finishing
kick, topping its two rivals in the ratings as it heads into an election
year.
Meanwhile, CBS had the most prime-time viewers for the fourth straight
week, even though television watching was down because of Christmas
celebrations.
The "Nightly News" had an average of 10.8 million viewers during the
final
three months of the year, and ABC's "World News Tonight" had 10.4
million.
The "CBS Evening News" had just
over 9 million viewers, on average.
With the competition normally very tight, this represented NBC's widest
lead over ABC since the second quarter of 1998. "Nightly News" was
also the
only evening newscast to gain viewers over the final three months of last
year.
In prime time, CBS had an average viewership of 11.2 million people (7.6
rating, 14 share). ABC had 10.5 million (6.7, 12), NBC had 10 million (6.8,
12) and Fox had 7.4 million (4.9, 9).
UPN continued its comeback, once again topping the rival WB network. UPN
had 3.9 million viewers (2.5 rating, 4 share), the WB had 2.9 million (2.1,
4), and Pax TV had 1 million (0.8, 1).
ABC's "Monday Night Football" matchup between Green Bay and Minnesota
was
easily the week's most-watched program.
And, in a cultural milestone of some sort, the "WWF Smackdown!" drew
more
viewers than NBC's Christmas Eve airing of the movie, "It's a Wonderful
Life."
For the week, "Nightly News" led with 11.3 million viewers (8.3
rating, 16
share). "World News Tonight" had 11.1 million viewers (8, 16) and the
"CBS
Evening News" had 9.3 million (6.8, 13).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the
nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of
in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
