Thirty-two million viewers bid farewell to Michael J. Fox
The hour-long episode last Wednesday drew 32.7 million viewers, the largest audience for an ABC comedy since last year's ``Home Improvement'' finale, Nielsen Media Research said Wednesday.
Fox is quitting the series because he's suffering from Parkinson's disease. ``Spin City'' is continuing with Charlie Sheen. Although last week's episode was heavily promoted as a farewell, ABC has said Fox will appear in a handful of episodes next season.
``Spin City'' eclipsed three installments of ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' in the ratings, enabling ABC to maintain its dominance.
Tuesday was a successful night for dramas, with both ABC's season finale of ``NYPD Blue'' and CBS's competing ``Judging Amy'' finishing in Nielsen's top 10.
For the week, ABC averaged 13.6 million viewers (9.2 rating, 17 share). CBS was a distant second with 10.2 million viewers on average (7.4, 13), NBC had 9.5 million viewers (6.8, 12), and Fox had 6.7 million viewers (4.5, 8)
UPN had just under 4 million viewers (2.6 rating, 4 share), the WB had 3.2 million viewers (2.3, 4), and Pax TV had 1.1 million viewers (0.8, 1).
NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the evening news ratings race with 9.4 million viewers (7.0 rating, 16 share). ABC's ``World News Tonight'' had 8.7 million viewers (6.8, 15), and the ``CBS Evening News'' had 7.1 million viewers (5.5, 12).
NBC also won the May ratings sweeps in news, beating ABC in a tight competition by 4 percent.
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
