Who needs new movies? ABC struck ratings gold with a rerun of the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille epic about Moses, "The Ten Commandments."
The Sunday night airing of the Charlton Heston flick cracked Nielsen Media Research's Top 10 shows for the week and had 26 percent more viewers than the last time it was shown two years ago.
It helped lead ABC to a prime-time ratings win for the 16th week in a row, nearing the network's all-time winning streak of 18 weeks, set in 1978-79.
ABC had been running "The Ten Commandments" annually from 1992 to 1998, but took last year off -- and it seemed to whet the viewers' appetites for the Easter-season favorite.
"Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" was the week's most-watched show, drawing 28 million viewers to ABC on Tuesday.
After it plunged to 33rd place in the ratings even after following an episode of "Friends," NBC has canceled the new Thursday night comedy, "Battery Park." Another Thursday comedy, "Daddio," is doing better.
ABC's new Friday night reality show that depicts the manufacturing of a musical act similar to ***'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys has fallen flat. It drew only 6.8 million viewers last Friday, ranking No. 70 for the week.
On cable, Discovery's "Walking With Dinosaurs" documentary on Sunday shattered its own all-time ratings record, set just last month with "Raising the Mammoth." The dinosaur special had 10.7 million viewers, the highest for a non-sports cable show this year.
For the week, ABC had a prime-time average of 13.3 million viewers (9 rating, 15 share). NBC was second with 10.3 million (7.5, 13), CBS had 9.6 million (6.8, 12) and Fox had 7.5 million (5, 8).
UPN had 3.5 million viewers (2.5 rating, 4 share), the WB had 3.1 million (2.3, 4) and Pax TV had 1.2 million (0.9, 2).
NBC's "Nightly News" and ABC's "World News Tonight" both drew 9.9 million viewers last week (7.4 ratings, 16 shares). The "CBS Evening News" had 8 million viewers (6.1, 13).
A rating point represents 1,008,000 households, or one percent of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use TVs tuned to a given show.
