The mutilation of slaves
The long queue, which moves slowly towards us, has come to a halt. "Bar, bar," one of our Sudanese helpers calls to me, which means "Please come here, quickly!" Under an acacia tree stands a wooden table upon which there is a glass plate with a thin layer of printer's ink rolled onto it. As a rule we take a fingerprint of the right index finger of each returned slave, but this young woman has no such finger on her right hand.
