The economic impact of expatriates leaving Saudi Arabia
A steady stream of expatriates is now leaving Saudi Arabia in the wake of recent violence and terrorist attacks. Many are setting up home in Bahrain and Dubai with the aim of servicing the Kingdom by remote control and regular visits. What economic impact will this have?

Egypt Prepares to Train Palestinian Police
Mood:  not sure
By DONNA BRYSON
Associated Press Writer

June 26, 2004, 1:48 AM EDT

CAIRO, Egypt -- The first day, Egyptians opposed to the war in Iraq were allowed to vent their anger in the streets. The next day, authorities let the police loose.

Officers beat the largely peaceful protesters, lashed them with water cannons, set dogs on them, even pelted them with stones. Human rights groups say demonstration leaders were detained for days or weeks without charge, and in some cases tortured.

Crackdown keeps the Israeli peace
ABOVE the tabloid headlines in Israel in recent weeks marked by almost forgotten commonplaces - a lifeguard strike, a dog attacking a child, a dispute over a baby between its natural parents and adoptive parents - has been hovering a screaming, if unwritten, banner: "No terror attacks".

For the first time since the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out almost four years ago, the country has gone four consecutive months without a suicide bombing.

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz spoke during a meeting with U.S. envoy William Burns, who is touring the region to mobilize support for the withdrawal plan.

"Muslim Reformists Against Wahhabi Islam
An increasing number of reform minded Muslims have begun to speak out against the impact of Saudi Wahhabism in the Muslim world. They have accused Wahhabism of serving as Al Qaeda's guiding philosophy, "poisoning minds" of young Muslims, and being the main purveyor of anti-American, anti-Semitic, and anti-Christian sentiment in the Arab and Muslim world.

UK group takes aim at anti-Arab media bias
Mood:  d'oh
A London-based group striving for fairer coverage of Arab issues in the British media says violence perpetrated by Arab organizations in the Middle East is often reported without explanation of the root causes, leading to an unbalanced version of a story. "While not excusing the killing of civilians, much of the violence in the Middle East is currently due to the occupation of Iraq and Palestine," said Sharif Nashashibi, director of Arab Media Watch
