Joan Ehlis, WØJJE, Net Control
Joan Ehlis, WØJJE, is our primary Net Control Operator for the District 16 ARES.

Joan J. Ehlis, a native of Pueblo, Colorado, has been a licensed amateur since the early 1970s.  Her original call was WBØALK for a technician plus ticket.  Restructuring afforded her a General class ranking and she later changed her call to WØJJE.

Ehlis is a 1961 graduate of Central High and a 1965 graduate of Southern Colorado State College (now University of Southern Colorado) with a multiple major in journalism/English/education.  Following college, she worked as the first and only woman in the news department at KOAA-TV, channel 5, in Pueblo.

Ehlis and her husband bred, raised, and showed Westhighland White Terriers in a 4 state area.  She currently has a grand-daughter from her first male dog as a pet called Tabor.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Ehlis taught reading and speach in Walsenburg and Pueblo School district 60.  She had a Children's Theatre that toured all the schools in district 60 so all young people were exposed to drama.  Ehlis is now retired.

She is past president of the American Association of University Women and the Colorado YLs.  Currently she is active in ARES and the Thunderbolt Amateur Radio Association.

Ehlis is the author of Enigma, a book of poetry, first published in 1979 and enjoys gardening, cooking and arts & crafts.
