THE COSMIC OWL

My Likes And Dislikes

My loves include: Cats, birds, dolphins, music (from Mozart to Queen, taking in Mike Oldfield, Enigma, AC/DC, Dire Straits, Gregorian, John Farnham, Kevin Bloody Wilson and Neil Diamond along the way), writing poetry and short stories, rain on my tin roof, chocolate, fantasy, chips, eating out, sleeping in, getting my writing published, reading, TV, quizzes, both running and competing in them, being snuggly warm in bed or on the beach, movies, mucking about on the computer, club trips and good looking men!

I have a collection of collections, including books, music, videos, DVDs, dragons, butterflies, hat badges, hats, fridge magnets, vases, soft toys, keyrings, pictures and friends.

My great love is science fiction, including Doctor Who, Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Blake's 7, Battlestar Galactica (the original, not the recent rubbish) and of course Star Wars.

My Doctor Who love began when Christopher Eccleston came in as the 9th Doctor. I'd always liked it, but now I became a fanatic! When Chris left and David Tennant took over, I took quite a while to adjust, but now I think he's even better than Chris. No companion has ever been as good as Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, and I still can't watch the Doomsday episode where she is whisked off to another Universe, separated from the Doctor forever, without a plentiful supply of tissues on hand.  (Although Donna Noble, as played by Catherine Tate, gave Rose a bloody good run for her money!)

My love of Star Trek began with Captain Kirk and Spock, and progressed through The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager. When the new Enterprise series was made, I felt it was a giant leap backward, and couldn't adapt to it, so I wiped what I'd taped, and left it to the fanatics who'll watch anything as long as it's Star Trek. I like to feel that I have a more discerning taste!

Blake's 7 is the darker side of the future, but it's well written, well acted, and probably the most intelligent sci-fi show around, so I have the complete set of DVDs.

Other TV shows I really enjoy are MacGyver, CSI, Law and Order, Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, Rumpole of The Bailey, The Good Life, The Vicar of Dibley, Boston Legal, M*A*S*H, dinnerladies, The Goodies, The Bill (the early days) and To The Manor Born.

Favourite movies include the Harry Potter series, Star Wars, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, etc., with a liking for musicals and disaster movies. Not claiming to have any favourites, but I'll watch anything starring Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan, while Brad Pitt must rate a mention!

I used to like ringing in to local radio station, and once they asked what people can do now that they couldn't do when they were younger. I heard people say things like stay up late, etc., which I thought was boring, so I rang up and won a pack of 3 CDs because I boasted that I can wobble my belly up and down!

Finally, I love the independence of living alone, with the freedom to be totally selfish and to do what the hell I like. It's a great way to live!

My favourite movie genres include sword and sorcery (Krull, Lord of The Rings, etc.) sword and sandal (The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, etc.), fantasy (Harry Potter, Labyrinth, Neverending Story, etc.), feelgood movies (The Mirror Has Two Faces, The American President, etc.) comedy (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Full Monty, Men In Black, etc.), good musicals (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Sound of Music, etc.) and good drama (A Time To Kill, Blown Away, The Fugitive, etc.)

I must also admit to an unhealthy obsession with disaster movies (Dante's Peak, Volcano, Towering Inferno, Independence Day, etc.) Although I'm not normally keen on Irish dancing, my videos of Michael Flatley's Lord of The Dance and Feet of Flames get a regular workout.

I'm not sure how to categorise my favourite movie of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird. Is it drama, feelgood or family? I think maybe classic may be the way to go!

My loathes include: Most politicians, weeds, terrorists, missing buses, cold weather, crime, judges who are soft on criminals, people who sue anybody instead of taking responsibility for their own choices and mistakes, political correctness and hot spicy food.

Civil libertarians are high on my hit list, as are parents who let their kids roam the streets at all hours, not seeing the need to teach them moral values.

TV programmes that I can do without include most American so-called comedy shows, Oprah Winfrey style chat shows, reality shows (Big Brother, etc), but I do know where my "Off" button is!

I'm also not keen on dirty jokes, but I do enjoy off white ones.

Favourite live shows I have seen include Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar (the John Farnham version), The Rocky Horror Show, Torville and Dean, Roxette, Les Miserables, Shout, and UB40 live onstage (with the wacky tobaccy smoke coming off the stage straight into the mosh pit, making us high) As far as I can recall, it was a night to remember!

About the best stage show I saw was the Queen musical, We Will Rock You. Loud and magical! Though I did see a Tribute Band, Bohemian Rhapsody at one of Perth's theatres, and if I hadn't known better, I'd have sworn it was Queen up there. They were truly awesome.
