Lair of the Unidragon, Page Fourteen
You pull out your sword and start polishing the blade against your green velvet sleeve. Since your hearing is quite keen, you have detected the footsteps while the people making them were still rather far away, which gives you plenty of time to not only get into position, but practice feints and lunges as well. When two scruffy-looking Humans finally catch up to you, you are more than ready for them.
"Took ya long enough!" you call out tauntingly.
They start at the sound of your voice. They are both quite large and muscular, but also with a layer of fat. They are clad in ragged, motley leathers and furs and carrying large burlap sacks over their shoulders. The taller one has matted ash-blonde curls; the other ratty, shoulder-length copper hair. That seems to be the only difference between them. They both have equally ugly, pudgy, pimpled faces and they both reek of cheap ale and caked-on sweat.
"Who are you, little shrimp?" bellows the blonde, lunging forward. "How dare you--"
The redhead places an arm across his path. "Let me handle this, Roger." He steps towards you, more slowly than Roger had.
"Just because YOU'RE the older brother," grumps Roger, "you get to do EVERYTHING first." He leans against a tree to sulk.
"Now, little Elf," says Kendryc with mock politeness, a smarmy smile on his face, "do you work for Lord Anthony, perhaps, hmmn?" That smile again. "Tell me the truth and no-one will get hurt." He pulls out a dagger and waves it menacingly.
You snort. "Lord Anthony? That lowlife? I work for none other than Princess Zenith, herself!"
"Yeah, right," sneers the redhead.
"I'll get him, Kendryc!" growls Roger, a hungry look glittering in his beady pig eyes. He pulls out a mace and lunges for you. Kendryc does nothing to stop him this time.
It doesn't look good.
