Home Page	Footloose in Austria ~ 2 films on one DVD Part one ~ Hallstatt Walks, *THE DETAILS...* The picturesque village in the heart of Austria's alpine lake district is the perfect place to begin two circular walks in the lovely Salzkammergut region. Although there is good access by road to Hallstatt, by far the most spectacular is to arrive at the railway station across the pristine lake, and take the ferry which comes to meet the train... breathtaking! Hallstatt is picture perfect and they want to keep it that way. There are plenty of day trippers, but it is very quiet at night, in fact most of the restaurants are shut on at least one evening of the week. Out of a huge variety of walks from the village into the mountains or around the beautiful lake, we have chosen two that take you round the major attractions here. The first is a medium-difficulty circular walk up through a steep zig-zag miners' trail in the woods to the oldest saltmine in the world. Here you can take an entertaining tour through the tunnels and slides within, and emerge on a little train. After this it's a pleasant hike to the noisy and spectacular glacial waterfall (Waldbach). After this you descend through an unusual rock formation called the Glaciergarten and back along the river to Hallstatt. The second walk is easier, and takes the ferry over the lake and through the village of Obertraun to arrive at the Dachstein mountain cable car. This takes you up to two spectacular caves, the Icehole and the Mammouth Hole. Return is back round the lakeside with an optional excursion up beside a rockfall to a pretty clearing with cattle with distinctive bells. Hallstatt is an amazing World Heritage site, over 7000 years old with a prehistoric graveyard on the mountain and history museum amongst it's colourful lakeside houses. If you stay in the relatively compact centre of town you won't need public transport at all. Despite "The Sound of Music" musical being released in 1965 the city is still proud of all of its film locations, some of which are found on our recommended trail... It starts in the Schloss Mirabell gardens then crossing the bridge over the fast flowing river Salzach. To make it easy, we suggest the Mönchsberg lift to the museums and gardens above the city for really special views. Then it's on through woodland to the Fortress and all its attractions. Next is the once powerful convent on the Nonnberg. After you have had your fill of history, descend umpteen steps into the "old town" and make your own haphazard trail around the famous musical city. There are a number of grand squares to explore all with their own story, plus performances by street musicians from the University, and wonderful cafés. Mozart came from here so you can't miss a visit to his birthplace. We recommend a river trip on the power cruiser "Amadeus" to the magnificent Hellbrunn Palace with some surprises in its gardens. On return, cross the river again to the "New Town" with a number of interesting attractions, before climbing the steps into the parkland of the Kapuzinerberg, for the best views of the city. Mozart was born here, the 'Sound of Music' was filmed here and the prestigious Salzburg Festival are all testaments to the city's unique musical history. *MORE IN DEBRA'S DIARY*

We recommend hotel bookings by www.expedia.co.uk Hallstatt is reached by taking a bus from Salzburg terminus to Bad Ischl (the train goes a longer way round). Then (the scenic way) a train to Hallstatt station, which is met by a ferry to take you across the lake to the little town. The total journey is around 45 miles.
