Low cost flights to the fabulous capital of Catalunya make a do-it-yourself city break simple. Getting to the Alpujarras, however, involves a 2-hour bus trip from Granada or hiring a car... but it's worth the trouble. Although only 30 miles or so from the busy coastal resorts in Andalucia, it is another world.. one of goat-herding, medieval water courses, wild flowers and rural charm. - See travel and trail information links at the bottom of the page - *Highlights and places to visit:* ALPUJARRAS- the unspoilt mountain villages of Bubion, Capileira and Pampaneira form the basis of an enchanting and peaceful holiday... to walk the flower bedecked trails or relax in the charming rustic bars and restaurants. Bus trip to Mulhacien, Spain's highest mountain in the Sierra Nevada. BARCELONA- A Gothic City, a Roman City, a planned City ..all rolled into one, connected by a simple and efficient tube train network. Gaudi's exotic modernist buildings are a must to see. "The Ramblas" main street is a riot of street performers and shops. Cable cars will take you up the mountain for spectacular views, or to the glitzy harbourfront. Home Page	Footloose in Spain ~ 2 films on one DVD Part one~Walking in the Alpujarras THE DETAILS... There are some spectacular walks underneath the hot sun of Andalucia on the slopes of Spain's highest mountain range: the Sierra Nevada. This area is quite dry and claims to have 300 days of sunshine per year! Late spring and autum are the best times to go because the sun beating down whilst walking can become too strong. The main features of this unspoilt region of southern Spain are the pretty whitewashed moorish villages, ancient mule tracks, and numerous water courses where butterflies and wild flowers bask in the sunshine. The dramatic scenery, with its steep valleys and high peaks, makes some of the best walking country Spain can offer, with spectacular views. We make two trails out from Bubion wher the simple Villa Turistica accomodation offers decent food and drink and a comfortable bed... The Poqeira Valley trail is to a deserted village and back via the larger village of Pampaneira amongst a wonderful selection of wild flowers, tumbledown dwellings and subsistence farms. The second trail climbs high with spectacular views then down through a succession of delightful white moorish villages known as La Taha with the local folk going about their ways as they have done for centuries. Our trail ends at the exoticly named Busquistar, but you can go on to Trevélez. There is a bus service back to Bubion, but only 3 times a day, so have the local taxi number handy in your pocket (from Pitres). Read more about Alpujarras in DEBRA'S DIARY Watch Alpujarras video	See what it's like - watch a preview from our DVD - press the 4-arrows button if you want full screen playback Part two~Discovering Barcelona, *THE DETAILS...* Our planned trail through the colourful streets of this beautiful Catalan city is based loosely on the Modernism Trail (Ruta Del Modernisme) This takes in not just Gaudi's famous archtecture which is what Barcelona is most known for, but other grand designs too. We start by taking a bus out to Gaudi's Guell Park, an unfinished residential masterpiece like nowhere else! After this we head back into the city passing the Hospital, and the amazing Sagrada Familia unfinished cathedral, then Casa Mila with not a single straight line in the whole design. The trail leads us past many others in the Iexample district as we walk down the elegant Passieg de Gràcia. Arriving at Plaça Catalunya we plunge down the vibrant and entertaining Ramblas, the most famous street in the whole city, and a real touist trap. To the side of the street is the beautiful Gothic Quarter centred around the first Barcelona cathedral and many fine ancient buildings. The Modernism trail finishes at the Parc de la Ciutadella next to the Zoo. We then make our way along the glitzy seafront and up to Montjuic, the military castle served by a cable car. Here, there are the best views of Barcelona and below is perhaps the most exciting free show of your whole stay here... the Magic Fountains. At night, colourfully lit water displays gush and splash in time with the loudspeaker music, reflecting just what makes this city so special. Barcelona's Magic Fountains We recommend hotel bookings and flights to Granada (Alpujarras) by www.expedia.co.uk** A bus service runs between Granada terminus and the Alpujarras (passing through Bubion, ending at Trevélez) three times a day. The Alpujarras and Barcelona are hundreds of miles apart and it is not an easy journey (by rail and plane) between the two destinations. Barcelona has an extremely good Metro system which is easy to use and seems to take you direct to wherever you want to go!
