Footloose in London ~ Four Episodes on one DVD Part 1 ~ Introduction & the Royal Parks You head out via Carnaby St, Oxford Street, and arrive at the start of our suggested trail at Marble Arch and into lovely Hyde Park. The Royal Parks have a history just as long as the city itself. In our DVD are several experts giving sound advice about walking in London. Passing the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner you pass the war memorials, and head down Constitution Hill... If you time it right, you can see the magnificent Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. You could be entertained by a number of different regiments, say, the Coldstream Guards supported by the Band of the Welsh Guards. (Information From the British Army website below will help). After the crowds have dispersed you can take refreshment in St James's Park, perhaps the most attractive of the Royal Parks, and head towards Horseguards. From here you pass through into Whitehall, the most important street in the UK. From here our suggested trail loosely follows the Jubilee Walkway through the busy streets of London. See below for a web link. Part 2~ The City of Westminster After witnessing all the grand and important buildings in Whitehall, our trail takes us through Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly and Leicester Square. Theatreland and Chinatown add colour to this busy district. If you are in need of refreshment, we suggest you visit the Lamb and Flag, the oldest pub in Covent Garden, hidden in the back alleys. The pub has a very chequered history, involving bare knuckle fighting historic muggings and a ghost story (see our DVD). Mull all of this over a pint before you watch the street performers in Covent Garden Market. A short trip to the river Thames finds you at Waterloo Bridge and some spectacular views... If you want to follow our 12 mile - (20 km) London trail and stop to look at some of the attractions, it will take you 2 days or more: Print out OUR ITINERARY New edition2016! |

You can witness just how devastating the great Fire of London and the WW2 Blitz must have been. Rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren from the ashes of 1666, splendid St Paul's Cathedral has its own story to tell. You can find out more after this by visiting the superb Museum of London. There is a scale model of the original St Paul's inside. The whole museum is dedicated to London's history, reaching back to pre-Roman times. You take a walk through the Barbican to look at the Roman wall, then on through the financial district of the City and find the Monument. This lovely piece of architecture, also built by Christopher Wren, marks the spot where the Great fire of London began. Dave climbs to the top to see all the new buildings in the City. You then head down towards the magnificent Tower, and Tower Bridge. Part 4 ~ South Bank to Westminster Once You have crossed the river Thames on Tower Bridge, all the best alternative attractions on the South Bank will be passed by sticking to the Jubilee Walkway. We have based a fair bit of our Footloose trail on this classic route. Starting at the fabulous More London complex you will see the famous London bridges; Dave's expedition up the Shard; all the horrific and gory entertainment in Southwark; Shakespeare's Globe theatre; the Tate Modern Gallery and the amazing Millennium Bridge. . Walking further along the side of the River Thames you will pass by the 1951 Festival of Britain site which has become the biggest arts complex in Europe. Reaching County Hall, you can climb aboard the London Eye and take in the best panorama of London for half an hour. (Best to book ahead in busy periods). As your magnificent trail through London ends, make it on the hour, so you will be greeted with the chimes of Big Ben, there is nothing quite like it! Pretend to be announcing on ITV "News at Ten", then set your watch. It's only a short walk then to the Parliament buildings and Westminster Abbey. All in all, it has been almost 20 kilometres of the very best sights in the City. MORE IN DEBRA'S DIARY . |

When you walk the steets on this, or any other trail in Central London, you will start to wonder why on previous visits you have spent so long going down and up steps, escalators and connecting passageways! If you are not after fancy food, then London pub grub can be good value if you are watching your pennies. Many pubs seem to be in stiff competition with each other and the price of drinks and basic food can be surprisingly good value. During busy periods service can be patchy.
