The cause of the blundered legend on this coin may have been caused by:
  • The die maker was in the habit of putting EDWR *ANGLD *NS HYB on halfpennies and thought the extra D went on the farthings
  • The new legend of ERANGLDN (which followed the ERAGLIE legend) had been approved but not put into production and the die maker added the extra D in confusion
  • The new legend of ERANGLDN was in production, but the die maker forgot and put the old legend. Rather than scrap a die that had taken hours to make (and get in trouble with his boss) he put a D on the end hoping the mistake would not be noticed
  • It was just a random mess up - by why a D and not any other letter in his die set?
