Cruel to be Kind

Libby and Drew- it's all Over!

When Ramsay Street's Libby Kennedy accepted handsome Drew Kirk's marriage proposal after a rocky courtship, it seemed their troubles were over. Sadly, in the episodes screening this month, an unforeseen tragedy propels them to split up again- and this time it's for good. As Libby recuperates in hospital following an horrific motorcycle smash, doctors deliver another devastating blow. According to Kym Valentine, who plays Libby, the implications force her to rethink her future.

"As a consequence of her injuries, Libby learns she is unable to have children," Kym reveals. "Even though Drew is supportive and tells her it doesn't matter, she knows it will. Kids have always been important to Drew, and even though he's okay about it now, Libby thinks he'll change his mind in the future. She doesn't want him to end up resenting her, so she decides to set him free. She tells him she doesn't love him, and that the wedding is off."

Libby's decision comes as a total shock to Drew and needless to say, he does his heartfelt best to convince her to change her mind. "Drew pleads with Libby to reconsider," Kym says. "He assures her that it doesn't matter, and he still loves her no matter what. But Libby has made her mind up, and nothing he can say or do will change it." Even continued pressure from Libby's parents- Karl and Susan- falls on deaf ears.

"Libby's parents suspect there is an ulterior motive to her decision, but Libby sticks to her guns," Kym reveals. "She plays it very calm, and maintains she doesn't love Drew. It's the hardest, most painful decision she's ever made, but it's for his own good." When Kym first read the script, she admits to having more than a few reservations. After all, she copped much abuse from the public over Libby's reluctance to get together with Drew in the first place. "Drew was in love with Libby for a long time before she was in love with him, and some viewers got a bit frustrated by it," Kym recalls. "They thought Libby was the unreasonable one, so it was such a relief when they finally got together. Now hopefully people will understand that she's actually doing a noble thing, sacrificing her own happiness for him."

So is it really the end for soap's golden couple? While Kym is bound to secrecy, she does hint that this break up is more serious than the others. "In the past, Drew and Libby have had tiffs, and got over it," she says. "But this time, it's not going to be so easy. They both go their separate ways, and if they do end up back together, it will be a long, long way off." Kym also drops hints that a third party might complicate matters even further. "There's someone else in the street that decides to set their eyes on Drew," she teases. "It remains to be seen exactly what Drew will do, but if Libby keeps pushing him away from her, who could blame him for turning to somebody else?"
