When Libby Kennedy¡¦s new
employers fire her this week in Neighbours because she is pregnant, look
out! ¡§Libby was ecstatic when she first got her new job at The
Chronicle, because she¡¦s always wanted to work on a big city
newspaper,¡¨ reveals Kym Valentine. ¡§The editor promises to call her
with a contract, but she hears nothing. Then she phones the secretary, who
says, ¡¥Sorry, I don¡¦t know you.¡¦¡¨
Libby is confused, but she
talks to her husband Drew and works out why the paper¡¦s attitude has
changed. Drew told her editor that his wife is pregnant, and the paper¡¦s
response is something the feisty journalist won't
take lying down! Libby enlists the help of her neighbour and law student
Maggie Hancock. Together, they decide to sue The Chronicle for
discrimination.
¡§It¡¦s important to
Libby to stand up for her rights,¡¨ Kym reveals.¡¨ But they don¡¦t get
very far. The Chronicle sends a lawyer over to talk to them who says,
¡¥If you take this to court, you won¡¦t win.¡¦ Libby and Maggie decide
to fight it, but they know it¡¦s not going to be easy.¡¨
It puts Libby under even
more pressure, which is something she doesn¡¦t need in her delicate
condition. ¡§She is in enough trouble with the pregnancy already- she
really ought to be taking it east,¡¨ Kym says, ¡§But being such a
headstrong character, Libby can¡¦t let it go without a fight. If I was
her, though, I certainly would!¡¨
