Wanna See behind the scene images? Well, Click here!! A violent storm, a reckless driver and two innocent young women are set to collide in upcoming episodes of Neighbours, resulting in at least one death and plenty of harrowing scenes. While returning home to Erinsborough after a weekend in the mountains, Libby Kennedy and Stephanie Scully meet with tragedy when their motorcycle is struck head on by a speeding car. The driver of the car- a regular character- is killed almost instantly, while both girls are thrown to the ground, badly injured. For Kym Valentine, who plays Libby, and Carla Bonner, who plays Stephanie, performing the action- packed sequence was both an exciting, and emotionally draining, experience. "It's the biggest thing I've been involved in during my five years on the show," Kym says. "It has all the elements of a big cliffhanger- viewers will be shocked." Neither Kym nor Carla will be drawn on the identity of the driver, except to say "it's someone who's been causing a lot of trouble." They also reveal that the accident comes at a time when the girls least expect it. "Libby and Steph go away for the weekend," Carla reveals. "It's all going really well- Libby even asks Steph to be her bridesmaid, which she's thrilled about. Then it's time to leave. The weather turns really nasty, and Libby is worried about the journey back. But Steph is her usual stubborn self, and insists they'll be fine. But the conditions get worse, and they can't do anything to stop the car hitting them." Neighbours viewers will have to watch over the coming weeks to see how the events unfold, and also to find out the identity of the ill- fated driver. While the girls can't divulge anymore, they're happy to discuss the experience of filming the shocking scenes. "We actually shot the episode on my birthday, but it wasn't much of a celebration!" Carla says. "We were up till four in the morning, but it was an amazing experience" "The fire hoses- which caused the rain- were the hardest thing to deal with, "Kym adds. "The last shot we filmed was Carla and me sitting on the bike with a fire hose directly on us. It was the heaviest rain I've ever seen! We were absolutely soaking wet. But all we could go was laugh at the end of it!" While the condition were far from comfortable, Kym and Carla both say the atmosphere helped with their performances. "Beforehand, I was trying to prepare myself for how I'd play all the shock and the tragedy," Carla explains. "But when I got there, laying on the wet road, I felt totally in the moment- vulnerable, scared and helpless." Kym's greatest concern was for the hard- working stuntwoman, who stepped in when the climax of the accident sequence was filmed. "It was frightening watching them," she recalls. "I was genuinely worried something would go wrong during the collision sequence, but they were brilliant. We were all in awe of them." Kym and Carla both agree the storyline is timely for the show and their characters. "Libby has been in domestic bliss with Drew, so it's good for something like this to shake her up," Kym says. "I also think it's good for the show- where the storylines are mostly everyday stuff- to have a bit of action every now and then." Carla likes the fact that her character is finally going to get some comeuppance! "Stephanie tends to think she's right about everything," Carla explains. "This accident will prove that she's not, and that maybe, if she wasn't so stubborn about things, it might not have happened at all." From: TV Week June 10- 16 2000 Writer: Jason Herbison |
