For any young married couples, establishing a home
and having a child or two are high among their hopes for the future. Drew Kirk
and Libby Kennedy are no different- but when Libby discovers she is pregnant in
this weeks episodes of Neighbours ,it's not entirely a cause for celebration. TV
Week caught up with Dan Paris and Kym Valentine, who play the duo, and
discovered why the news is greeted with excitement and fear.
"Libby was involved in a motorcycle accident
last year- and as a result of her injuries, doctors told her it would be very
dangerous for her to carry a child," explains Kym, referring to the most
heart-rending Ramsay Street storyline of 2000. "She could bleed to death,
so even though they want kids, they've been careful not to conceive."
Not careful enough, however. Doctors will confirm
Libby is expecting. "Drew is torn between two emotions- happiness and
concern," Dan says. "He's overjoyed at the thought of having a child,
but his most dominant concern is for Libby's health. He knows that she could
haemorrhage while giving birth, and the last thing he wants is to sacrifice her
life and possibly the child's."
Surprisingly, Libby's reaction is the complete
opposite. "Libby thinks it's a miracle baby and is meant to be," Kym
reveals. "She's not at all fazed by it. In fact, there's a calmness about
her. She knows there are risks and she'll have to take care of herself, but
she's confident it will all turn out fine in the end." As viewers will see,
it's much harder for Drew to relax and enjoy the moment. "He'll never
relax- he's in for nine months of turmoil!/; Dan says. "But that makes it
interesting for viewers. It would be no fun if everything went to
plan."
Libby's pregnancy is likely to be a rough ride,
but it hasn't put Kym off the idea of motherhood in real life. "I am the
cluckiest person in the world, so it's kind of good and bad to play this
storyline," she admits. "I actually thought it would get some of the
cluckiness out of my system, but putting myself in the situation has made me
more clucky! I can't get pregnant for real, though. I've done the mathematics,
and if I did I would be at my fattest when Libby has had the baby and is going
back to her normal size. It would throw the whole storyline!"
Dan gives a more cryptic response to the issue of
real-life parenthood. "I made my decision a long time ago about kids, and
it still stands," he says. "But I'm sure Kym will be a great
mum." For Kym, Libby's pregnancy means saying goodbye to her super-slim
figure. "I don't know if I'm looking forward to wearing the padding or
not," she admits. "It will be fun at first, but then I'll get on the
set and realize it's uncomfortable. The only good thing is that we're not
filming the scenes in summer, because I'd probably get very hot and
cranky!"
