Regardless
of their age difference, the bond between two sisters can be something that's
unbreakable. Even when their personalities are quite different, the connection
can withstand all the storms of a lifetime. In this special issue of TV WEEK, we
shine the spotlight on celebrity sisters. And there was no shortage of stars who
were eager to share their thoughts on their sibling bond. We were keen to find
out why they connect, and what their hopes and aspirations are for the future.
This week's cover features Neighbours star Kym Valentine and her sister Shayne,
and Home and Away's Rebecca Cartwright and sister Kristy. These siblings
exemplify that makes sisters so unique: a relationship based on love, support-
and the occasional bit of gossip!
Kym
and Shayne Valentine:
Ever
since TV WEEK began interviewing Kym Valentine six years ago, we've been hearing
about a little girl named Shayne. Way back in 1994, Kym hadnˇ¦t long left her
home town of Sydney to move to Melbourne, where Neighbours is filmed. While
excited to have won a plum role, she had one major regret. "I was 17 when I
left home, and Shayne was just six years old." Kym recalls. "It was so
hard to leave her." Kym says she felt an instant bond between them the day
Shayne was born.
These
days, Kym is 23 and Shayne, a keen drummer, is going on 12. Despite geographical
distances, they remain as close as ever. Shayne and mum Janey often drive to
Melbourne to visit Kym. "Whenever I go to visit, I go with Kym to work and
help her learn her lines," Shayne says, while Kym adds, "She learns
them faster than me!" The sisters enjoy "Shayne days" together,
when Kym treats her non- stop. So, we ask Shayne, how does Kym compare with her
Neighbours character? "Kym whinges more than Libby!" Shayne declares,
ignoring Kym's horrified look. "And she chucks tantrums all the time! But
she wears better clothes than Libby, and she makes me laugh more." Well,
that's reassuring!
