The Guardian is built around Australian actor Simon Baker, who plays a lawyer forced into community service after a drug bust.

In fairness to CBS, those six weeks would have been "The Guardian" reruns anyway and ratings for reruns of a show as serialized as "The Guardian" always take it on the chin. Remember when Hollywood wouldn't even show a pregnant woman on television? Now the more realistic, the better. And it would appear that producers are not shying away from tackling some tough subject matter.

On CBS's "The Guardian," they have introduced a new story line for the TV drama's lead characters. Simon Baker plays Nick Fallin and Wendy Moniz plays Louis "Lulu" Archer. The characters are going to have a baby. Tests show that the child will be born with Down Syndrome, a disease that causes mental retardation. For now, "The Guardian" remains his primary effort. David Hollander defends it against charges that it's grown too dark in recent episodes that featured Nick Fallin (Simon Baker) returning to drugs and cheating on his pregnant girlfriend, Lulu (Wendy Moniz, who is pregnant in real life, a coincidence that didn't dictate the story). "Just hang with the show," Hollander advised. "Like any character-based show, darkness is going to come, and it is usually followed by brightness. In episodes 16, 17 and 18 in particular you'll see some pretty remarkable turns in the characters and a little more lift in the show." If there was ever call for the introduction of a sideways thumb into The Guide, this could be it. On the one hand, the scenario of a coke-snorting tosser of a corporate lawyer, Nick Fallin, being sent to do pro-bono work for children is kind of creative and the actor who plays that lawyer, Simon Baker, is good-looking and an Australian. No one wants the TV drama "The Guardian" to be renewed for a fourth season more than Jennifer Johnson.  She became one of the show's writers last year and is anxiously awaiting the news as much as any of the series' fans or actors. The CBS primetime show THE GUARDIAN will address Down syndrome in a new episode on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 9:00 p.m. ET. The episode titled All is Mended. It will feature guest star Blair Williamson as Mark Barlow. Williamson has Down syndrome and has been a professional actor for more than 10 years. This episode has a twist in the storyline that will be of interest to everyone with Down syndrome and their family and friends. Tune in on February 10rd to learn more!

Although he doesn't get much work, Blair Williamson has a remarkable resume. He has appeared as a guest star on ER, as the younger brother of Dr. Maggie Doyle . He has also been in the 1995 USA network film, "My Antonia". Blair was cast as Marek Shmerda, Antonia's brother .

"Century City" (9 p.m. Tuesdays, March 16): Set in 2030, this talky legal drama follows lawyers through their futuristic cases. Stars include Nestor Carbonell ("The Tick"), Hector Elizondo ("Chicago Hope") and Ioan Gruffudd ("Horatio Hornblower"). "The Guardian" would have been in reruns for six weeks and will return to its regular time slot April 27.
