About KMAX

KMAX, part of the Paramount Stations Group, is the UPN affiliate for the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto market, designated as the 19th largest market in the nation.  KMAX produces its own 4 and one-half hour Good Day Sacramento morning newscast, which is comparable to KTLA's Morning News in terms of its on-air feel.  The wacky Mark S. Allen sits at the desk during the entire broadcast, throwing in comments every now and then, and does his entertainment report every hour.   Abbott Dutton has headlines at the top and half-past the hour, live from the newsroom.

What strikes me as weird is that KMAX just recently added another hour to Good Day Sacramento, from 9:00am to 10:00am, but is still without a 10:00pm newscast.  KMAX did at one time have a prime-time newscast, when they pushed the UPN primetime back to 7:00pm and had 31 Action News at 9:00pm.  I believe Abbott Dutton anchored the half-hour show.  It would have made more sense to keep GDS at 3.5 hours and add an hour-long UPN 31 News at Ten to compete with KTXL, KOVR, and KQCA.  Maybe four 10 o'clock newscasts are too much for the Sacramento market, but I don't think that would be the case.  It would probably make KOVR cancel their 10:00pm news and move it back to 11, which I believe would be a smart move on their part.
