About KXTV

KCRA's stealing the claim that it's Northern California's News Leader.  In terms of ratings, yeah, it is the leader.  But this Gannett news powerhouse is hot on the tail of KCRA in the local news ratings race.  I'd bet that in three years, KXTV is the Sacramento market leader.  It's got the talent, the on-air look, great reporters, and it's surely got the awards.  In fact, KXTV's "News 10 at 6:00" was awarded the Emmy for best newscast in California.  Pretty impressive, considering that the Emmys take the Los Angeles market into consideration as well.  KXTV has a chopper (a Eurocopter AS350 A-Star, with a Flir Systems gyrostabilized camera), and it maybe broadcasts one police chase a year.  The last chase that was carried live from Air10 was when a guy was fleeing in an eighteen-wheeler, in a chase that lasted 100 miles and finally ended when the rear tralier flipped over onto its side.

KXTV also won Emmys for Best Serious News Feature story (a Cristina Mendonsa sweeps piece on identity theft), best Breaking News event (when a Greyhound bus flipped over on I-5 near Sacramento International Airport), plus three more Emmys including the Best Newscast award.  KCRA's winning the older crowd in the northern Sacramento metro area, while KXTV's getting the younger 25-50 demo in Elk Grove, Laguna, Natomas, Roseville, and the yuppie Midtown area.

The only plaguing KXTV from claiming the top spot is its lack of a substantial presence in the early evening.  KXTV only has time for a half-hour broadcast at 5:00 and 6:00.  If KXTV could expand "News10 at 5:00" to an hour and push back World News Tonight to 6:30, KXTV would be the outright news leader in ratings and everything else.  Unfortunately, they have contracts to broadcast Hollywood Squares, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy!, and therefore, cannot expand local news in the early evening.  KXTV could just pawn Hollywood Squares off to some station like KTXL, KMAX, or KCRA, and Gannett would have its own ratings powerhouse in the 19th largest market in the nation.
