Living with Ichthyosis

This is My Story

My Story     Bathing      Moisturizing       Exfoliating       Killing the Monster      Daily Routine & other links      Diet

05/05 - I came across a very interesting article on Psoriasis and looked at what most medical professionals were prescribing for this particular disease and what the actual medical determination or findings were in test patients.  One common denominator was Lactic Acid.

And then I came across another article from a German Prof.,  whom was doing clinical trials with Urea, which I have placed below. I couldn't translate all of the information, but for the most part it tells what it needs to.

UREKA ! its ...UREA/URINE !!!! This is what a German Professor is recommending,  Not just Lab made Urea, but actual urine from the patient. Below I have placed what they recommend for using.

I have been testing this theory for two months and applied it to my own regimen. With what I would call remarkable results. Rather than use different methods and different moisturizers and then have to use another base as a carrier for the urea, I came up with my own mixture, just like in the past.

Below is the Makeup of what I came up with.

After many years of using different products and "learning" about my disease, I know that Ichthyosis requires different applied actions and results for each individual application of a particular product, ointment or lotion for each individual part of the body. But the bottom line is "Healing" solving the Desquamation" problem and forcing the disease itself into remission, so it is just an underlying known ailment and not visible.

Carbamide, the precurser to Urea is produced by the body to allow your urine to pass through your blood supply with out the affects of any ammonia. It is a by-product of the breakdown of amino acids.

Glycerin is an excellent product for allowing the skin to release the dead flakes and recessed ones as well.

Lactic Acid is also something that is lacking in the skin of people with Ich.

Moisture and a barrier we all know already are just as important.

My solution to this problem and required makeup was this.

I mixed the urine with hydrogen peroxide to act as a carrier and to help break it down from its original 100% makeup. I use a mixture of Hydrogen peroxide (3% h2O USP) 3 to 1. 3 parts hydrogen peroxide and 1 part Urine. Placed the solution in a spray bottle, and then microwaved for just a short period, so it will be warm.

Before taking a shower and while standing in the shower, spray the mixture over all parts of your body (excluding face). Gently rub mixture into your skin, after a complete saturation. I gently rub until it seems to be drying 1-2 minutes. Then Rinse completely. You will find that with using the peroxide that there is very little if no urine smell and it will actually feel smooth/slippery while rubbing it in. Pat dry and then apply the following mixture (Lotion)

For my Daily Lotion/Moisterizor I have put together the following: Mixed in a blender

In a 32 oz bottle I mixed the following and then poured it into smaller bottles.

16 oz of mineral oil or Crisco or baby oil (do not use saturated oils or fats)

3oz tube of KY Jelly lubricant, yep...it has Lactic Acid and Glycol. in it and also improves on the moisture application and barrier.( I use the warming type)

1/2 stick of deodorant (white Powder) this I suppose would be personal preference, but I like the smell it gives your mixture. Remember you are going to add Urine.

4 oz of hydrogen peroxide ( Antiseptic )

4oz of Petroleum jelly ( I have eliminated this in my mixture because I have started to show NO signs of Ich).

4oz of urine.(9-10%)

(Continue on the 500mg of arginine and *DHEA a day) It can be purchased on line or at any health food store.

Side Affects: None other than my Body Hair is much lighter due to the Peroxide. * Follow your Doctor's Advise, DHEA  & Arginine are not for everyone. If you are a male. --Note-- I experienced a small rash around my testicles. It was just for a few days and I treated it with (over the counter) Zinc Oxide, went right away. So now I avoid that area all together.

One product, One Goal, Currently I am not using the spray, I did that to sort of "Jump start the process" and am using the lotion mixture daily. I am still on my Diet, both of which by the way are related issues some Chinese professors and German Professors alike are trying to understand and dtermine to what extent, these two roles will hinder the Ichthyosis process and health related issues associated with Ichthyosis. they know Diet plays a very important role in people with Ichthyosis and are trying to understand how it correlates with such devastating and very progressive breakdown and health of the skin, which is an organ and has a lot to do with your immune system. They suggest Milk (Lactic Acid) My diet doesn't include milk, Can't stand the stuff. But just like in my early days, I saw a Doctor whom thought Allergies could play a role in how Ichthyoisis presents itself.

One interesting point I would like to make is that; At an early age I was allergic to Fish and Shell foods. Over a period of time I have been able to eat these foods with no Reaction. I am also very allergic to Bees, but I am not going to get stung, just to find out if not being allergic is something to think about. I am severely allergic to penicillin as well. I think on my next visit to the Doctor and if my Health Insurance covers it, I will get a Scratch test done to see if this is something I still have to worry about.

Although I have some Chemistry background and a degree, I am not a doctor, so all of my recommendations and or suggestions, are just that. I cannot predict or promise that this will work for everyone, But after studying and scouring over countless documents from other countries and seeing how they are allowed to treat this disease and Having the disease myself, I can't come up with a single complaint or feel that I am on the wrong course here, my picture speaks for it self and I hope that my solutions and everything I have shared... gives everyone of you, who suffer from Ich, the same exact results. My twin, who suffers from the same thing...is absolutely amazed at the results I have come up with. Winter is coming soon and I will keep posting on the steady course I am on and determine whether I should change or eliminate something. And I will keep posted my actual and current condition. Please do not experiment with the Arginine until you have consulted your doctor.

My next project for this site is to follow the same exact treatment and remedies with and on my brother. He has been very hesitant and lacks discipline, so this won't be easy, but it will be very interesting. He is also, not to keen on spraying himself with "Urine".

Also a reminder, If you are using something that turns your skin red or irritates...STOP using it.

Be disciplined   "Take some time to heal in time"

(German Article)Contact to the left of preface to the ointment treatment in Ichthyose

of prof. de Wolfgang sexton, TOMESA-specialty clinic, bath Salzschlirf

The treatment of the skin with ointments / creams always individually must be adapted. Different ointments require different body place. The compatibility of ointments / creams is also very different.

For the total skin treatment, following ointment bases can be used as an example:

Basis cream DAC

Ungt. Corduroy

Abitima cream

Ash basis cream

Ungt. leniens

Eucerin anhydr. and Eucerin cum aqua

Ungt. emulsificans

Physiogel-cream

Into these ointment bases, urine material should be mixed. The concentration depends on the compatibility. As a guideline, one can take:

5% Urine material for the face

10% Urine material for the body

10% Urine material + 5% milk acid for problematic places (knee, elbow)

The redder a skin is, the less urine material it will endure according to experience. In addition to the urine material, for example cook salts can and or milk acid to the effect strengthening thereto mixed become.

Footnote: The chinese are also experimenting with this method and I have come across some information which covers the same exact therapy except some of them are suggesting 12 - 25% Urea. And in clinical trials from both the German Clinic and the chinese, the larger the %, the better each respective patient became.

Other useful information

Arginine:An amino acid, C6H14N4O2, obtained from the hydrolysis or digestion of plant and animal protein. Organic compound, one of the 20 amino acids commonly found in animal proteins. Only the L-stereoisomer participates in the biosynthesis of proteins. Its basic side chain adds a positive charge and hence a greater degree of water-solubility to proteins in neutral solution. Although arginine can be synthesized from cellular metabolites, it is usually considered essential to the diet of children for the maintenance of normal rates of growth. Arginine is the direct metabolic precursor of urea, the dominant nitrogenous waste product of most mammals. It was discovered in protein in 1895.

a bitter tasting amino acid found in proteins and necessary for nutrition; its absence from the diet leads to a reduced production of spermatozoa,
Arginine plays an important role in cell division, the healing of wounds, removing ammonia from the body, immune function, and the release of hormones. It can be found in many foods such as meat, poultry, dairy products, and fish. The body also uses arginine to produce nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. For this reason, it has been used to treat cardiovascular disorders such as heart failure, intermittent claudication, impotence, female sexual dysfunction, and interstitial cystitis.

DHEA:dehydroepiandrosterone

is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands found atop of the kidneys in the human body. DHEA is also produced in the gonads, adiopose tissue and the brain. DHEA is structurally similar to, and is a precursor of, testosterone and estrogen. In blood, most DHEA is found as its derivative dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, DHEA-S.

Only in humans is DHEA the dominant steroid hormone. Humans produce DHEA in greater quantity than any other species. Even non-human primates have not much more than 10% the relative serum level of DHEA seen in humans. The fact that rodents produce so little DHEA makes the results of experiments based on these laboratory animals very controversial.

DHEA production peaks in early adulthood, around the age of 25, and declines afterwards to approximately 10% of peak levels by age 80. It is theorized by some that this decline may be due to reduced oxygen and glucose supply to the adrenal glands as a result of age-related atherosclerosis.

Disputed effects of DHEA

The significance of the hormone in health and disease is not fully established. It is postulated that DHEA supplements are beneficial in the prevention of:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes
  • hypercholesterolemia
  • obesity
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • disorders of the immune system
  • depression
  • osteoporosis

It is also commercially advertised that DHEA:

  • helps decrease insulin resistance
  • improves fat metabolism
  • increases immune system function
  • has anti-aging properties
  • increases lean muscle mass

Precautions

Some assert that DHEA should not be supplemented outside specialist centres under careful observation of experts in the field of endocrinology.

Side effects may include:

  • ireversible male breast enlargement, gynecomastia
  • prostate gland enlargement
  • extensive growth of body hair, or hirsutism
