Established in 1982 Fishermead Residents' Association (FRA) represented the interests of the then 1,000 residents of the residential estate of Fishermead in Milton Keynes, UK. The intention was to ensure that the views of the local population were taken into account by the then County Council, Borough Council and the Milton Keynes Development Corporation which as developer of the new city had awesome powers including the right to overrule the local government of the area with regard to planning issues. As the years went on the adjacent parcel of land was named Oldbrook and development of private residential dwellings commenced there. This new area originally had its own residents' association but this folded after a short period of inactivity. FRA was then asked by Oldbrook residents to extend its remit to cover both areas and took on the new name of Fishermead & Oldbrook Residents' Association (FORA). The association was formally registered with the then Department of the Environment to ensure that
our letters or complaints were formally replied to. The association also spawned the Milton Keynes Federation of Residents' Association which now has over 56 members. FORA has developed a formidable information and contact base such that
we have rarely failed to achieve our objectives. We now represent 7,500+ residents (approximately 50% of the population
of the local government parish). Membership is free and open to all legal residents after six months. The organisation has a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer
all of whom are unpaid volunteers. Most of our funding has of recent years been obtained from Campbell Park Parish Council for which we extend our thanks. Geoff Taylor
was the founder of Fishermead & Oldbrook Residents' Association. He was also a parish councillor, and a member of a whole raft of community and voluntary organisations in the new city of Milton Keynes. When he died the parish council set up an
autonomous educational trust in his memory. This trust has regularly awarded grants to residents of the parish to further their education
and vocational training. A growing number of residents have used this facility
to help in obtaining their degrees thus furthering one of Geoff's lifetime
dreams. |
