1979 Secret Affair - Glory Boys The Sex Pistols - The Great Rock and Roll Swindle Sham 69 - The Adventures of the Hersham Boys Pete Shelley - Sky Yen Jeff Troutman: Actually recorded in 1974, oddly enough. The Shoes - Present Tense Silicon Teens - Music For Parties ("Judy in Disguise") Simple Minds - Life in a Day Sinceros - The Sound of Sunbathing ("Take Me to Your Leader") The Skids - Scared To Dance Slaughter and the Dogs - Slaughter and the Dogs EP The Slits - Cut Patti Smith - Wave ("Fredrick," "Dancing Barefoot") Souxie and the Banshees - Join Hands The Soft Boys - A Can of Bees (Unfortunately, this wonderfully eccentric British band is not very well known; those who know them know their many great, quirky, unique musical moments) Jeff Troutman: Agreed. Leader Robyn Hitchcock's solo work is also well worth searching out. The Specials - The Specials ("Message to You, Rudy," "Concrete Jungle," "Too Much To Young") (the greatest of the ska revivalists) Split Enz - Frenzy Squeeze - Cool For Cats Stranglers - Stranglers EP Styx - Cornerstone ("Babe") Supertramp - Breakfast In America ("The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home") Swell Maps - A Trip to Marineville Talking Heads - Fear Of Music ("Life During Wartime") Teenage Jesus and the Jerks - Teenage Jesus and the Jerks Pink EP Tiny Dancer: The only link I could find was for a compilation called Everything Telex - Looking For San Tropez Richard and Linda Thompson - Sunnyvista Throbbing Gristle - D.o.A. The Third and Final Report Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats Throbbing Gristle - Heathen Earth Tin Huey - Contents Dislodged During Shipment The Tourists - The Tourists 20/20 - 20/20 The Undertones - The Undertones ("Teenage Kicks") U.K. Subs - Another Kind of Blues (a progenitor of 80s hardcore, British division) Van Halen - Van Halen II ("Dance The Night Away") Sid Vicious - Sid Sings ("My Way") Various Artists - Rock and Roll High School (soundtrack) Tom Verlaine - Tom Verlaine Wailing Souls - Wild Suspense Wire - 154 XTC - Drums and Wires ("Making Plans For Nigel") Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps ("My My, Hey Hey," "Powderfinger") (a wonderful tribute by the great Mr. Young to the newer generation of rockers) Jeff Troutman adds: Bill Nelson's Red Noise - Sound-On-Sound This Heat - This Heat Durutti Column - The Return of the Durutti Column Steel Pulse - Tribute To The Martyrs Tiny Dancer adds: Abba - Voulez-Vous ("Does Your Mother Know," "I Have A Dream," "Angeleyes," "Chiquitita") Knock it if you must but I enjoyed Abba's disco hit, "Does Your Mother Know", so there! April Wine - Harder ... Faster ("I Like To Rock," "Say Hello") John Denver - John Denver It says something about the decade when John Denver, pop music's little country cutie, could release a live album in the midst of all that hedonistic disco flash and punk trash and reach number 25 in the charts. No hits, just Denver doing what he does/did best, playing his guitar for a crowd of appreciative fans. John Denver and The Muppets - A Christmas Together Maybe I'm biased as a Denver and Muppets fan but this is just fun. The TV special they did is very hard to find these days but the album is just as good. Noteworthy to me for the achingly beautiful "When The River Meets The Sea". Jim Henson and John Denver, two voices sorely missed. Little River Band - First Under The Wire ("Lonesome Loser," "Cool Change") Excellent album, love "Mistress Of Mine" as well. 1980 would see the release of their outstanding double live album Backstage Pass. Half of it was recorded with a full orchestra and their music never sounded better. Some highlights: "It's a Long Way There," "Light of Day," "Fall From Paradise," "Reminiscing," "Help Is On The Way," "Too Lonely Too Long," and "Red Shoes". I was trapped in my crush on lead singer Glenn Shorrock at the time so I may be biased :-) Barry Manilow - One Voice Barry had no intention of resting on his 70s laurels and came out with this very strong album at the end of the decade. Donna Summer - On The Radio: Greatest Hits Vol I & II Such was Donna's run on the charts she needed a double album to cram all her hits into one very pleasing package. I loved the title track myself ("On The Radio") and would boogie in my bedroom to "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff," and "Bad Girls". But the duet with Barbara Streisand ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)") drove me insane very quickly, enough IS enough, girls! Trooper - Hot Shots ("Boys In The Bright White Sportscar," "General Hand Grenade," "Two For The Show," "We're Here For A Good Time (Not A Long Time)," "Round Round We Go," "Raise A Little Hell") Another greatest hits package, this is the only Trooper album you need to own to enjoy their fab music. 1970/ 1971/ 1972/ 1973/ 1974 1975/ 1976/ 1977/ 1978/ 1979 Visit us all at alt.culture.us.1970s Website designed and maintained by Tiny Dancer (tinyd@bell.net) Graphics courtesy of |
