Noteworthy and/or Hit LPs

1975

Tiny Dancer's additions:

Abba - Abba

("Mamma Mia," "SOS," "Bang-A-Boomerang," "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do")

America - Hearts

("Daisy Jane," "Woman Tonight," "Sister Golden Hair")

America - History - America's Greatest Hits

This was the only America album you needed and it still gets a lot of play at my house. All the biggies, "A Horse With No Name", "Sandman", "Ventura Highway", "Tin Man", "Sister Golden Hair" and the lovely "Daisy Jane", ahhhhh.

April Wine - Stand Back

("Oowatanite," "Tonite Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love")

Couple of big hits here in Canada. "Oowatanite" caused a bit of a problem with rabid fans due to the clanging school bell used in the song. Apparently bells began disappearing from local schools at an alarming rate.

Bay City Rollers - Bay City Rollers

("Shang-A-Lang," "Be My Baby," "Saturday Night")

First American release from the Scottish teeny-bopper rockers, this was a combination of their first two European albums, Rollin' and Once Upon A Star which both reached number one on the British charts. I was fortunate (or unfortunate depending on your view) to be visiting my grandparents in England during the Rollers' peak and remember well the mob scene at a local restaurant after a concert. Hordes of screaming young girls waving their tartan scarves over their heads, it was all a bit frightening! Love 'em or hate 'em there's no denying they were a huge success in the 70s.

Bee Gees - Main Course

("Nights On Broadway," "Jive Talkin'," "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)")

Captain & Tennille - Love Will Keep Us Together

I'll admit it, I had this one, I know it's not Tom's style ;-) The title track was infectious (at the time) and I loved their cover of The Beach Boys' "Disney Girls".

The Carpenters - Horizon

("Only Yesterday," "Desperado," "Please Mr. Postman," "Solitaire")

Harry Chapin - Portrait Gallery

("Dreams Go By," "Tangled Up Puppet," "Star Tripper," "Bummer")

I literally wore out my 8-track of this amazing album where Harry goes a bit dark on the incredible "Bummer" and opens the tear ducts with the story of a daughter growing up too fast, "Tangled Up Puppet", among many classics.

Jim Croce - Photographs & Memories: His Greatest Hits

("Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown," "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)," "Photographs And Memories," "Time In A Bottle," "New York's Not My Home," "I Got A Name," "These Dreams")

If you only had one Jim Croce album then this was it.

Gordon Lightfoot - Cold On The Shoulder

("Rainy Day People")

Gordon Lightfoot - Gord's Gold

("Canadian Railroad Trilogy," "Softly," "Early Morning Rain," "Sundown," "Rainy Day People," "Cotton Jenny," "Don Quixote," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Carefree Highway")

And this was the only Gord album you needed, a smash hit double album crammed with hits.

Barry Manilow - Tryin' To Get The Feeling

("New York City Rhythm," "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again," "Bandstand Boogie," "I Write The Songs")

Ironic that one of Barry's biggest hits, "I Write The Songs", was one of the few he didn't write.

Olivia Newton-John - Have You Never Been Mellow

("Please Mr Please," "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)")

Olivia Newton-John - Clearly Love

("Something Better To Do")

Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise

("Love Is A Rose," "Tracks Of My Tears," "Heat Wave," "I Will Always Love You")

Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" has never sounded better, sorry Whitney Houston fans!

Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby

Donna's second album (her first, Lady Of The Night, was never released in North America) produced her biggest hit in the orgasmic title track (which was banned on many radio stations) and sealed her fate as The Disco Queen.

Trooper - Trooper

("General Hand Grenade," "Baby Woncha Please Come Home")

Produced by Randy Bachman this album was the debut of one of Canada's best rock bands.
