Africa was in 1982 released as the third single from the album TOTO IV and it was a huge hit all over the world and one of their biggest hits ever. It was the only TOTO song that reached # 1 on the US Billboard (February 1983) and it was in The Netherlands a # 2 hit and in the UK a # 3 hit. In 1990, 1991 & 1993 the song was re-released agian.

The idea of the song came from David Paich, playing on the piano.

David Paich about Africa:

"At the beginning of the 80's I watched a late night documentary on TV about all the terrible death and suffering of people in Africa. It both movedand appealed me and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about if I was there and what I'd do".

Jeff Porcaro about  Africa.

"A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he'd never been there. he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past. Geographically it doesn't make sence ... the Kilimanjaro isn't near the river named in the song".

Although Africa is one of TOTO's biggest hits ever, it almost didn't get it to the album. TOTO had worked with the song for a very long time and was so tired on it that they almost skipped the song when compiling the album.

"The reason why cuts 11, 12 and 13 are included with this other material is that we wanted to offer something special from our recent trip to South Africa. This was the first time we had played there so we decided to create something new of something old. Thus we added "Baba Mnumzane" to the fornt of "Africa" as an intro with a traditional 7-piece South African choir. To augment that Simon recruited 5 local percussionists and rehearsed the day of the show, some newly written parts for them to play. At this point there were 18 musicians on stage bringing them and us together for a memorable event that we felt we should include here".

The idea of this song originally came from Mark T. Williams. He explains: "I wrote the progression and groove one night in the summer of 1987. It wasn't really any kind of inspired or conscious effort, it just came out. My brother Joseph came home from a sesion for 'The Seventh One' and told me he thought the song would be something good for the record. That was funny to me because the original working title on the sequencer disk was 'Something Good'. He took a cassette to the studio the next day and played it for Jeffrey Porcaro, who loved it and said: 'We've got to have this thing'. I then finished the music with Joseph. David Paich and Joseph wrote most of the lyrics".

"When we were in high school, we were basically a Steely Dan tribute band. It was me and Landau on guitar, Carlos Vega on drums, Steve Porcaro on keyboards. Jeff Porcaro was the drummer in Steely Dan at the time and so we were obsessed With learning the whole of the Katy lied album before it came out, and Bodhisattva ended up opening our set. It's also a bit of a tribute to Jeff as well - it's 10 years since he died. Steely were really important to us as kids. They were what we wanted to be like. They were very melodic and they had some great guitar solos. Anyway, he got this Jamaican guy, Tippa Irie, to come in and do this rap while I was away with Simon in our Mahavishnu band. It's kinda stepping over the edge for us but, who knows, we might even get a couple of plays on the radio because of it. Steve Lukather, Mike Porcaro & Simon Phillips wrote this instrumental song when David Paich was on a skiing holiday, so that's why it is called Dave's Gone Skiing. The working title of this song was first Jake To The Bone II, but when they choose for Dave's Gone Skiing as title it became also one of the  suggestions for the album title. After a dutch radio show in which Steve Lukather participated and where he asked their fans for some title suggestions, they decided to call the album Tambu.

"The reason why cuts 11, 12 and 13 are included with this other material is that we wanted to offer something special from our recent trip to South Africa. This was the first time we had played there so we decided to create something new of something old. Thus we added "Baba Mnumzane" to the fornt of "Africa" as an intro with a traditional 7-piece South African choir. To augment that Simon recruited 5 local percussionists and rehearsed the day of the show, some newly written parts for them to play. At this point there were 18 musicians on stage bringing them and us together for a memorable event that we felt we should include here".

Goin' Home didn't appear on the album Past To Present and it had to wait 8 years on a shelf before it was released on the album TOTO XX 1977 - 1997.

"'Hold the line' was a perfect example of what people will describe as your heavy metal cord guitar licks, your great triplet A-notes on the piano, your slide-hot-fun-in-the-summertime groove, all mishmashed together with a boy from New Orleans singing... and it really crossed over a lot of lines".

David Paich about Hold The Line:

"It started out with the piano riff that is in the intro. I started playing this riff and I just couldn't stop playing it. I played it for days, and I started singing, "Hold the line, love isn't always on time." It was a phrase that just came into my head. . . . it was a blessing. (The words) came to me in the night, and then I went to the verse. I wrote it in 2 hours. Sometimes songs come quickly like that, and sometimes I spend 2 years trying to finish a song".

Jeff Porcaro about Hold The Line (2):

"That was me trying to play like Sly Stone's original drummer, Greg Errico, who played drums on "Hot Fun In The Summertime." The hi-hat is doing triplets, the snare drum is playing 2 and 4 backbeats, and the bass drum is on 1 and the & of 2. That 8th note on the second beat is an 8th-note triplet feel, pushed. When we did the tune, I said, "Gee, this is going to be a heavy four-on-the-floor rocker, but we want a Sly groove." The triplet groove of the tune was David's writing. It was taking the Sly groove and meshing it with a harder rock caveman approach". (Modern Drummer 1988).

"I flipped the first time I heard myself on the radio. My mom called me up and said, "Turn on KLOS." It was the song "Hold the Line," and I started running around the house in my underwear, screaming, "I'm on the radio!" My wife was cracking up. "I was asleep, I had my alarm clock set for noon because we were gonna do something in the studio, some promo and when the alarm came on there was the radio and "Hold The Line" was playing. Bobby Kimball is from New Orleans and the first time we jammed it was when we were doing a show down there. Paich, just for a joke really, started playing it in the soundcheck and Kimball started singing. Now that wasn't the arrangement that ended up on the record, but it gave us the idea to do the song. I said, Why don't we take the Dave Gilmour approach to it? So then we changed the chords around and our version came out sounding a little bit psychedelic. Dave Gilmour is one of those few guitarists whose name typifies an actual style of playing. I've copped a lot of stuff off Dave and he's a friend." Together with Kingdom Of Desire  is Kick Down The Walls the only song from TOTO in which no bandmember has participated in the songwriting.

It was first Jeff Porcaro who wanted TOTO to record this song, but when it was finished he didn't like the result. That's the reason why the other bandmembers has tried to remove it before the release of the album Kingdom Of Desire after Jeff's death. Unfortunately something went wrong and the song is included in some of the versions of the album.

"I've known Danny for a long time. He always said to me "why are you doing something that you don't want to do?". One day, Jeff came to the rest of the band saying "this is a song we must do!" and he made us listen to "kick down the walls". The original version was more rough, but we made it into our own version. The song is interesting in the sense that it was written about the streets of L.A., and it was written even before the L.A. riot. My house is on the hill, so I remember "overseeing" the fire and the riot from high above....."

"for this song, Danny himself came to us and said he wanted to produce it, so we had him produce the song. That's why it sounds different from the rest of the album. For me, it's a song that I like the least...but that's a secret to danny (laughs)".

Last Night was recorded in 1987 for The Seventh One album, but never released by TOTO until the TOTO XX 1977-1997 album. In 1997 Elliot Scheiner did the mixing of the song. 

Before the release of the TOTO XX 1977-1997 album, it was released on a German sampler album called "Now is the time - Wir helfen Kindern" (BMG Ariola # 74321548762). This sampler is a special Christmas release from RTL Television, and propably only available in Germany.

Altough Bobby Kimball left TOTO after the TOTO IV album he did the lead vocals for this song. In 1989 TOTO tried to re-unit with Bobby Kimball again for the recording of some new songs for the greatest hits album Past To Present. They recorded only one song with him, because there were still personel problems playing at that time. Goin' Home didn't appear on the album Past To Present and it had to wait 8 years on a shelf before it was released on the album TOTO XX 1977 - 1997.

Lion is the last song in which Bobby Kimball has participated in the songwriting before he left TOTO.

When you listen to Lion you can hear a weird sound, just before the second verse begins at 1:20. There are many explainations for this weird sound: is it a backward message ("huntress" or "satan") or just a simple sound effect. When Fergie Frederiksen was asked about this he denied that the song had a backward message in it.

"The next two songs (Miss Sun & Love Is A Man's World) here are our original demos to get our record deal. The band wasn't even really a band yet. These were recorded over a wild weekend at Davlen in the Valley, 1977, with all our friends stopping by to party and dig what we were doing. Paich had convinced himself that he  "was" Al Green ... He was green all right. This was made prior to the Boz Scaggs hit version which we also played on, but it never captured the rawness and honesty of this first demo, we think?"

"See previous notes, but .... gee isnt this a prophetic title, HAHA. The Atlantic/Stax feel to this finger snapping hand clapping R 'n B groove was conceived at a time when Disco was king, to our dismay. So we paid tribute to it at the end with Dave's glorious cry to the frontier, "It's Disco time". Well we were laughing. Luke passes the audition on this one in spite of the really weird guitar sound".

"That was an idea that Simon and I had because we're the jazz guys in the band. I wanted to do something more musical and Herbie is a buddy of mine - he's jammed with us too. And we decided to put Maiden voyage together with Butterfly. Simon came up with about 75 per cent of the arrangement and I came up with the rest. This is a fast-paced rock-song, based on an instrumental track "E Minor Shuffle" for a James Newton Howard album (a version of "E minor shuffle" can be found on the "Tribute to Jeff" album by David Garfield and friends).
"On the run" was performed by Toto during their 1991 summer-festival tour in Europe. It was said to be one of the new songs on the then forthcoming album "Kingdom of desire", but for some reason it was not included in the end. In 1998, a live recording of "On the run" was included on TOTO XX.

In a 1998 interview with Toto99, Toto commented on the song: How did you come up with the idea of turning "E Minor Shuffle" into a hard rock song with lyrics?
Steve Lukather: That's what I wanna know!
David: I guess I'm the one to blame for that one. It always has just been a fun riff to play.
Steve Lukather: It was Jeff who really wanted to do that. He said write a verse and a chorus, so we did, and Fee Waybill wrote the words.

But it never ended up on "Kingdom Of Desire"?
Steve Lukather: We tried to cut it, but we just didn't get a take we liked and so we discarded it... it happens sometimes.
David: It's one of those tunes that feels better live for some reason than in the studio.

This song was written by David Paich and Joseph Williams. David Paich had first written the chorus, music and words, including the name, "Pamela." Meanwhile, Joseph actually had a girlfriend at the time named "Pamela" and had already written an entire song for her under the same name. The chorus of Joe's song was used in the bridge of the Paich/Williams collaboration, and Joseph wrote new words and melody for the verses as well. Practically all of the Paich/Williams compositions came about in the same way, that is, David had something started and Joseph added to or wrote to finish it off. 

Besides several good looking women, the video of this song features the silhouttes of the Toto members pretending to play the horn-section.

The song is named after Steve Porcaro's girlfriend at that time, the actress Rosanna Arquette ("Desperately Seeking Susan", "Silverado" & "After Hours").  In the sleeve-notes from Micheal Jackson's album "Thriller" she is also named in the "Thank You" list as Rosanna Porcaro. In the video for the song Rosanna is played by Cynthia Rhodes. 

The song Rosanna won 3 Grammy Awards in 1982 in the categories: Record of the Year, Best Vocal Arrangement &  Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. The video was nominated as the best video for the 1984 Video Awards.

David Paich about Rosanna:

"Rosanna is about three girls that I Knew all rolled into one. After I Met Rosanna Arquette, I think I just stole her name and stuck it on there".

Steve Lukather about Rosanna:

"Dave wrote it, prettÿ much came to us with the tune all finished. We don't rehearse, so when we do a record we just go in, dig the tune, someone writes out a quick chord chart and then we do it. Rosanna was basically live."  (Steve Lukather, Guitar Techniques, March 2003).

Bobby Kimball about Rosanna (how it became a duet):

"That's a good - a really good - question. We were over at David's (Paich) studio doing some writing and just fiddling around, which is something we did really well - especially the fiddling part," recalls Bobby. "Dave started playing the little parts from Rosanna. When he started singing the melody I just listened and suggested, 'well, I think it needs to be higher"
I meant that it needed to be in another key, a higher key. So he went from playing it in the key of C and changed it to F. The melody went up. As the melody went from here to there, lower to higher in mid-song, the jump was very cool. We all looked at each other and just said 'perfect, that's how we have to do it.' It was a natural progression. Because of the dramatic change, you needed two different vocalists. So Steve Lukather sang the lower part and I jumped in to sing the high part and that's how we recorded it, and how it ultimately became a duet - or a collaboration, if you will!"  "Once we released Rosanna it went crazy, straight to the top (five weeks at Number Two). It was a great surprise. We didn't think we could top it, but once we won the Trophy (Grammy) for Rosanna, the record company released "Africa" and it went to number one."  (Rockfever.com, 2000).

Jeff Porcaro about  the drum part of Rosanna was developed from John Bonham's playing on 'All Of My Love', speeding up the tempo and adding a bugaloo bass drum figure):
"Yeah, but the thing is I didn't go out and buy a John Bonham drum book and read the part. There are things, and I know this from my own experience, that you have to have an ear to hear before you can play them. Even if you have the best set of reading chops around, your ears have to be open enough to hear. If you're the kind of drummer that has to see something written before you can feel it, then you should quit school, stop buying books and open your ears to the music." (Hitmen, vol.1, nr.1, 1982).

Steve Lukather about Rosanna:

"That's pretty funny. You know where that (drum rhythm) came from? Jeff and us were really into Led Zeppelin, and Jeff morphed Foolin the rain (from Zeppelin's In through the out door) and a Bemard Purdie drum groove (from Steely Dan's 'Home at last') and came up with that Rosanna groove. So we went from there - by the end of that afternoon, we had done the basic rhythm track and I'd overdubbed some of the solo. Bang! The end vamp was never supposed to happen, we just started jamming and that's exactly what you hear. We still record that way..." (Steve Lukather, Guitar Techniques, March 2003).

David Paich & Steve Porcaro about the keyboard solo in Rosanna:

David Paich: "It's a combination of both of us playing. It's mainly Steve, but we both start at the beginning. When we were doing that song we found we had to put a solo in the middle of it. It was a question of what do we do now. Steve has always said we should use our imaginations. So I kind of started out with trying to incorporate everything we have at our home studio. Instead of doing a regular Wurlitzer or Hammond solo we decided to try different things. We started playing lines and finally sat down and Steve wrote out the initial basis for the solo that you hear now played mostly on the modular system."

Steve Porcaro: "It's actually a hilarious story. We thought about how to do that solo for weeks, and it all came together one day at five in the morning."

David Paich: "When you hear the opening lines, that's Steve playing a modular trumpet sound. Then we knew we wanted a sequence running down so I programmed a little thing into the Micro-Composer that Steve dropped into the solo. Then there's a Minimoog part, and at the end it's a combination of Steve and I both playing CS-80s, Prophets, a Hammond organ, and a GS1."

Steve Porcaro: "There's even a line in there that was from an older solo that David did which I forgot to erase. It was a very pieced-together solo. It was a great example of what can happen when two keyboard players get together and start messing around with technology. You get stuff that you don't plan on getting. Everything was written out and then the written-out stuff was abandoned. It's the right combination of discipline and non-discipline. It's also a good example of what can happen when you're not stuck in a studio with a bunch of people hanging over you saying, "Okay, let's do the keyboard solo now." We did it at home, and I was able to spend a couple of weeks at it. The way it happened wasn't in the norm at all."  (Keyboard Magazine).

Steve Lukather about his first guitar solo in Rosanna:

(Question) How did you approach the first solo in Rosanna which I believe was straight off the cuff?

Steve Lukather: "Yeah, that was straight off. I just went for it and everyone said 'but the thing at the end is just blowing'. That's not doubled. It was a one-off which luckily you happen to get once in a while. As a matter of fact, the song was supposed to end but Jeff carried on and Dave started playing the honky-tonk piano and we all just followed on. We've done that a few times, we've been playing together so long that it's like that. (International Musician, 1991).

Steve Lukather about his first guitar solo in Rosanna:

"That first solo was made up on the spot the first time we played 'Rosanna'. The other guys liked that solo so much, they asked me to do it again. So I had to re-play my improvised solo for the recording." (Gitaar net magazine, 2002)

Steve Lukather about his first solo in Rosanna:(Question) For Rosanna's first solo, you've got a very unique bending technique - you bend a tone with your third flnger and then fret that bend with your fourth finger for an additional note. Other players would choose the more 'country' approach of splitting those notes over two strings. What influenced that technique?

Steve Lukather: "I don't know, that's just the way I feel it. I like strange bends. When I was young, I loved Larry Carlton in that (Steely Dan) Kid Charlemange/Royal scam era - all the bending, sleazing in between,'finding the great note that goes into the change. I was greatly influenced by Larry, who's a good friend of mine now. He's one of my heroes - and I came more from a hard rock background and he's more a bebop-er, and we sort of switched where he played jazz with a bit more rock and I came from the other end. We both understand where we're going. His concept of harmony is fantastic..."

(Question) : As Rosanna's solo is so melodic, was it pre-planned?

Steve Lukather: "No, I had just started playing and it was one-take. What I did do was after I had played, the guys said I should double it. So I went back and learnt it and then doubled it. But the end solo is not doubled..."

(Question) : And that was a one-take too?

Steve Lukather: "Yeah, you get lucky sometimes with stuff like that. In those days it used to be I'd get the track and everybody would say 'do the solo now', and everybody would be partying in the studio. You'd have the whole vibe of people and friends hanging out, just great. Nowadays, it's more technical than it used to be. Now everything is so different, so I'm glad I had the experience I did back then. We were in the last era of session guys, as it doesn't exist in the same way anymore..." 

(Question) : On that outro solo, you've got big two-tone bends. Had you been listening to a lot of Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck the night before?

Steve Lukather: "Yes, of course! The first time I felt up a girl, I was listening to Led Zeppelin! Page has been really nice to me too since, as we've met up for different things. He said: 'Don't let anyone give you shit, Steve. I used to be a session guy too, as was John (Paul Jones). Don't let anyone tell you you don't rock because of that.'"

(Question) : The outro solo displays your very able picking-hand technique...

Steve Lukather: "I use everything; down-up-picking, down-picking, I use fingers. I don't ever think about what I'm playing now. But what I did do when I was a kid, which is the most important thing to remember so you don't hurt yourself, was stiffening up when I was trying to play fast. You have to learn to relax your fore arm and wrist. "lf you start practising and it begins to hurt, then stop practising. Otherwise, you'll get tendonitis, and you won't be able to play the guitar for a year, and you won't be able to accomplish what you want." (Steve Lukather, Guitar Techniques, March 2003)

It is very different and it’s easier for me really to write instrumental music because I don’t sing. "Spanish Steps of Rome," when I first sang that down low, people were looking at me like I was crazy. I'm a big fan of Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits. I like his lyrics, I like that kind of singing. When I started singing down low I was inspired to write that song, I wrote the lyrics in one night. Very different approach for me but I really like it. I was in Rome, I wrote the lyrics in one night, and I put the music to it and it just came out like that. And it's one of my favorite songs that I've ever done. When the guys listened to that they said "Why don't you sing up higher, why do you sing so low?" I had a lot of different influences, I was in Neil Diamond's band. "Elvis has always been really mean about Toto. We started at the same time on the same label and, whereas he was the critics' darling, we were the whipping boys. And whereas he always said shitty things about us, we never said anything. This was another CD from my wife's collection. I played it to the guys and they were like, Dare we do this? So I said, Come on, I'll do the full Elvis! So we cut the track and we did a sort of hi-fi version, because his is really loose and 'garagey' and we're not exactly known for our garage sound. Anyway, when it came to putting down the vocals and I started singing like Elvis, the guys were cracking up. I started getting into it and said, I want to be him; get the lisp happening and everything. I was in hysterics and we had to record it line by line. But it came out great. I doubt he's heard it - I don't see him buying our records - but we did it with respect because I like Elvis and I don't mind if he doesn't like me." (Guitarist, March 2003)

In the video Steve Lukather is walking through a large house, with his guitar and singing.The other members perform as well, and Luke joins them for his closing solo. The video's director was Tommy Chong (of the comedy team Cheech and Chong), who gave the clip the 'home movie'-type of feel. For the record, the house used was not Lukather's , nor was the woman his ex-wife Marie. ( Toto Legend, 1995)
Rumor has it the video for this song was shot inside David Paich' house.

You Got Me was originally a demo that David Paich wrote for Whitney Houston.

Jeff Porcaro about You Got Me:

"That track ("You Got Me") was a demo that David wrote for Whitney Houston. We heard the song and said, "We should do this in Toto." The song felt great; it was all electronics, drum machine, and stuff, and we decided to add real drums, percussion, real horns, guitar, etc."  (Modern Drummer, 1988).

Because Paich keeps a 48-track studio up and running at his home, and because other members of the band have their own studios as well, demo versions of songs for the albums can get quite in depth. "Actually, ‘You Got Me’, which is the second cut on the new record ('The seventh one'), is basically the demo from my studio," Paich recalls. "That is for exeption of drums, guitar, and the horn parts that we added later. The rest of it is all Linn 9000 playing my sequenced parts. It’s one of the few track that are sequenced because it was supposed to be the demo. But it turned out so well that (drummer) Jeff Porcaro said, ‘Just let me overdub my drums on it’. My two 24-track machines act as big cassette players. I have them striped with time code, just in case we get the magic during the demo recording."
