Borg

An immensely powerful civilization of enhanced humanoids from the Delta Quadrant. The Borg implant themselves with cybernetic devices, giving them great technological and combat capabilities. Different Borg are equipped with different hardware for specific tasks. Each Borg is tied into a sophisticated subspace communications network, forming the Borg collective, a shared consciousness in which the idea of individual was nearly a meaningless concept. The Borg exhibit a high degree of intelligence and adaptability in their tactics. This species operates by conquering whole worlds, assimilating the civilizations and technology thereon. The first known contact with the Borg was in 2365. Since then, Starfleet and the rest of the Alpha Quadrant has taken steps to prepare for an expected Borg invasion at any time. One such attack came in 2366. Starfleet was caught unprepared, having expected the attack months later. Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard was captured and assimilated in the attack, and a major battle ensued at Wolf 359. Approximately 40 Federation starships were present, but the fleet was decimated and 11,000 lives were lost. Later, the crew of the USS Enterprise-D was successful in destroying that cube in orbit around Earth, but only after recovering Captain Picard and returning him to his normal state. In 2373, another massive assault on Earth was attempted by the Borg, and although the cube was destroyed, a smaller Borg Sphere escaped into a temporal vortex, sending it back into Earth's past. The USS Enterprise-E followed, and was successful in preventing the Borg's plans of destroying Earth in the past. The Borg are also commanded by an entity known as the Borg Queen.
