Founders

Ancient civilization of shape shifters, the architects of the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant.  Long ago, the Founders explored the galaxy, but found themselves to be feared, hunted and killed by the solids (their term for non-shape shifters).  Out of self defense, the Founders retreated to the Omarion Nebula.  From there, they established the Dominion, through which they controlled hundreds of planets throughout the Gamma Quadrant, imposing order through ruthlessness and fear.  Although isolated, the Founders did not lose their curiosity about the universe.  They sent a hundred infant members of their species across the galaxy, implanting in each the strong desire to return home, so that the Founders could learn about distant places.  Security Chief Odo, stationed on Deep Space Nine, was one of them.  Each shape shifter has a strong family tie to the others, and no shapeshifter has ever killed another.  A shape shifter of this species can so well disguise themselves as any object or other alien species, that they cannot be detected even with sophisticated scanning equipment.  The Founders use a warrior race known as the Jem'Hadar to force compliance among the members of the Dominion.  In 2373, the Founders, aided by the Jem'Hadar , Vorta, and a newly formed alliance with the Cardassian Union, began an upscale invasion of the Alpha Quadrant.  This was the rise of the Dominion War, although it was events occuring as far back as 2370 that precipitated the war.  In 2375, the Founders had become fatally infected with a bio-engineered chemical that began to exterminate the race.  It is rumored that this epidemic was designed by a secret division of Starfleet Intelligence known as Section 31, but that has not been confirmed or denied to date.  Thanks to the efforts of Starfleet doctor Julian Bashir of Deep Space Nine and Odo, a cure was found and relayed to the Founders.  In 2375, the Dominion War came to an end when the Founders surrendered and agreed to stand trial for war crimes.  All factions of the Dominion were then recalled to the Gamma Quadrant.
