The Legislative Branch
The Legislative Branch Has the Following Duties:
- Makes Laws
- Checks Executive and Judicial branches
- The Impeachment Process
- Keep Congressional Record
The Legislative Branch consists of:
The House of Representatives
The Senate
Terms to Know
The House of Representatives
- Terms of Office: 2 years
- Head of house: Speaker of the House (Currently Newt Gengrich)
- Method of Representation: States are granted reps proportionally out of the maximum 435 representatives
- Special Purpose: The House of Representatives is where all money bills originate. This house initializes
impeachment charges against elected officials
To be a Representative in the House, you must:
- Be at least 25 years old
- Have been a US citizen for at least 7 years
- Live in the state that elected you
The Senate
Terms of Office: 6 years (Elections for 1/3 the Senate held every 2 years)
Head of Senate: President of the Senate (Vice President)
Method of Representation: States get 2 representatives each
Special Purpose: Acts as Jury in Impeachment trials
To be a Representative in the House, you must:
- Be at least 30 years old
- Have been a US citizen for at least 9 years
- Live in the state that elected you

- to accuse an elected official of wrongdoing or misuse of power
- Revenue-
- Money collected by the Government
- Elastic Clause-
- States that Congress may do anything that is "Necessary and Proper to carry out its duties
- Congressional Record-
- Public record of all Congress sessions
- Commerce-
- trade
- Congressional Immunity-
- immunity granted to members of Congress that states that members may not :
- be arrested going to or from sessions, and
- may not be sued for anything said during a session.
