"This was my baby hat."

He shyly held up the blue cotton beanie by its bunny ears.

"It's the hat I came home with when my mom and dad 'dopted me."

The teacher spoke up. "Now, does everyone remember what adopted
means from our lesson last week?"

"Yes, Miss Becky!" the kindergarteners yelled.

"What do you like best about the hat, William?" she asked.

"Um...the stars and planets and rockets on it. There's also a matching
outfit. It's at home, but the stars are all worn out 'cause I guess from
laundry." Little shoulders shrugged. "It's got a jacket, too. But that
don't got any stars."

He looked down at his feet and fidgeted before continuing softly.
"Mostly I like it cause I think maybe my birth mother picked it out for
me."

He looked up with tears in his eyes and smiled.

"She musta loved me to get me such a cool hat."

Authors Notes:

<RPfan>  SHs advice is to "write what you know." Since I am a teacher
and little kids are what I know best, we wrote about this. My students love
show and tell!

<SH>  I have never given anyone a cool hat with bunny ears, but I've
certainly written more than a few of these little stories for my friends.  I
hope they are viewed by their recipients as intended -- the literary
equivalents of "cool hats."
