My Name Is Madine, A Southern Lady Who Moved Up North In 1972 with my two children. Being a transplant from Alabama for twenty six years, Until I Moved BACK Home June 24,1998, I Truly Enjoyed Living In Salem, Oh. For Twenty Seven Years. I Met Many New Friends, As Well As Met and Married A Yankee. Sad To Say However, This Marriage Lasted Only Six Years. Ummm, I Don't Know Just What The Problem Is That I Don't Have The Best Of Luck With Those Things Called Husbands. Oh Well, Enough Of THAT!!
We Were Located Just 30-45 minutes South of Youngstown. (Congressman James Trafficant-- did I know him? Just 'of' him! He was not from my district . . . Thank God)!! In the few years I was there, there was a complete renovation downtown, and so much so, that every time I drove through or walked the streets, I was delightfully amazed at the change and beauty of it all. In spite of all the critics, doubters, (including myself) and other obstacles, and with the sacrifice, determination and help of its Leaders and Other residents, Salem made it through. Salem is to envied by anyone living elsewhere.
My Son, Daughter and I moved to this part of 'Yankee Land' from 'The Heart Of Dixie'
My Son stayed in Salem, married and he and his wife gave me three beautiful Grand Children. My Daughter, on the other hand, chose to return South, and in time married. She and her husband have given me three of the sweetest Step Grand Children ever andthe best part, they only live a little South of me in a town called Wetumpka just North West of Montgomery. NOW I'll Get To Be With Them!
I was getting too old for Ohio's winter COLD, Even Though The Last Couple Years I Was There, Wasn't As Bad As The One's Previous. However,I NEVER minded the snow, and I'm Sure I'll Miss It MUCH!
Now for the real reason I moved back South when I did. I had sister who had Alzheimer's Disease. Since she and I both were alone I thought I'd retire early, come down and live with her and keep her home instead of placing her in a Nursing home. This was really quite sudden, because I had come down for a week's vacation to be with her and check on thing's I'd heard about her. I decided to take another week during which time I made my mind up to retire early and do this. This was in June of '98. Since that time she had a stroke that left her paralized on her right side, and helpless. Her communicatiion was facial expressions and groans. She passed away, in her sleep, May 26, 2000. Alzheimer's is a very subtle, tragic disease that can strike so suddenly and/or gradually that you are left at the mercy of family or the state. Thank God for Friend's and Hospice! They have been a tremendious help to her as well as myself.
It was really tough being here in the house alone, after being with her for so long, that
I went back to work about three months after she passed away. I am at Holiday Inn Express
in Alexander City, Al. Night turn, Guest Services (Front Desk Clerk). It's really interesting
and challenging. By the way, if YOU are ever in this area (78 miles S. of Birmingham and 45 miles
N. of Montgomery on US 280, stop by, or better yet, make a reservation, and we'll put you up
for the night). That's 1-800-HOLIDAY! We just might get to meet!!! That'd be nice!
