New for the foreseeable future: At long last, I'm working on a full site overhaul - new design, new content, in addition to archived old material. When will it be done? I can't say for sure, but I'll publish it bit by bit. Thanks for your patience!

February 2004: After ten happy years, Mystery Date no longer resides at P.O. Box 641592, San Francisco, CA 94164-1592. I am in the midst of getting a new p.o. box, preferably one that's more convenient for me (since I haven't lived within walking distance of the old one for the last six years or so). I will let you know when the new address is up and running. Oh, the moral of the story is do not misplace your POB bill during the holiday season.

(Please note that obligatory book plug follows.) If you enjoy this site, you may want to think about buying a copy of my book,PINK THINK: BECOMING A WOMAN IN MANY UNEASY LESSONS. It's a smart, funny pop-culture history of femininity, primarily focused on advice and "femorabilia" of the 1940s-70s. According to E. Jean Carroll, whose "Ask E. Jean" column appears in Elle magazine, "Every woman with a brain should read this book." What are you waiting for? Visit the PINK THINK web site for more information, or stop by your favorite independent bookstore or the usual online vendors.

Welcome to Mystery Date online. Mystery Date is a fanzine devoted to my obsession with used books -- particularly old sex and dating manuals, etiquette and self-help books, and health, beauty and fashion guides.
Look, I can't explain it -- I just love 'em. If you really want to get on my good side, give me a 40s, 50s or 60s home economics textbook. I'll be your friend forever (figuratively speaking, of course).

I've been digging through thrift store book sections, rummage sales and remaindered book tables for years now. I know what it's like when your heart stops as you catch sight of something incredible, something that you never knew existed before - the ownership of which will make your life worth living, if only because you can show it off to your unsuspecting (and quite often unimpressed) friends.

I'm also acquainted with the opposite: waking up in the middle of the night with the realization that only a fool would pass up Bunny Yeager's Model Diet book, and that, yes, you are that fool. (Bunny Yeager, by the way, was the pin-up model turned photographer who worked with Bettie Page, among others. Now you, too, know what a fool I am.)

While I don't intend for this site to replace the paper version of Mystery Date: One Gal's Guide to Good Stuff just yet, I would like it to introduce the zine to the unsuspecting public, as well as provide something of interest to current readers. To that end, the Mystery Date web site will spotlight my Find of the Month or So -- be it a book, record or other tantalizing tidbit -- as well as selections from past issues. And while we're at it, you can also check out my plans for the upcoming issue of Mystery Date, as well as some links cool sites and analog publications. Meanwhile, the What's New section will keep you abreast of the latest additions to the site.

So start wandering. Have fun, be safe, and let me know what you think.
P.S. If you're wondering, yes, that is me on the cover of the V/Search Zines! book.
P.P.S. And as long as we're talking about it, be sure to read my column "The Museum of Femorabilia" in Bust Magazine.
