Hampshire Scouts’ Mountain Team “FAST TRACK - BETA” Basic Expedition Training Award Further your training to become a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Trainer / Assessor, a National Navigation Award Scheme Trainer / Assessor and a BETA award holder on the Hampshire Scouts’ Mountain Team Hampshire Scouts’ Mountain Team “Fast Track” BETA course. The Scout Association has developed a “Fast Track” method for Scouters who have completed their “Basic” or “Leadership 1” training to gain the Basic Expedition Training Award (BETA). The Scout Association Training you have already done counts towards the award! The BETA Award is normally completed in the following way; a single day followed by 4 weekends followed by a single day plus a log of 30hrs related voluntary community service. The HSMT course for Scout Leaders who have completed their training is covered in two weekends followed by a log of 30 hrs related voluntary community service. The community service could involve D of E training or National Navigation Award training with young people. On completion of the Award, BETA holders can operate under the Hampshire County Scout Council license as Trainers for Bronze & Silver D of E Awards and assessors for the Bronze Award. In addition they can act as trainers for the National Navigation Award Scheme at Bronze and Silver levels and as Assessors for Bronze level under the Hampshire Scout Mountain Team license for the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS). Experience Scout Leaders who hold their BETA Award and have a proven track record of training groups at Silver level for either the D of E Scheme or the NNAS Scheme can be considered as Assessors for the Silver level of the Awards. Please note that the BETA Award is not a “Wild Country Award” and Scouters wishing to undertake Queen’s Scout Award or D of E Gold award Training or Assessment or NNAS Gold award Training or Assessment should consider the a Mountain Leader Award Scheme and become assessed under the MLA or Scout Association Form M Scheme The term expedition has been used throughout these notes to remind Trainers, Tutors and Participants that it must seem adventurous in the eyes of the young people concerned. Its use does not imply, for BETA purposes, anything more demanding than travel in greenfield country. (This course programme was used on the pilot BETA course mounted by The Scout and Girl Guide Associations. Course organisation and session timings may vary but the course objectives must be met. Each session is supplied with notes that aim to provide suggested approaches to meet the outlined objectives defined by the Central Council for Physical Recreation.)
