Spelling Bee
by SpiderBraids This is also the same guy who plans on giving away free beepers if Helga doesn't win tomorrow's contest. Speaking of her, she is sitting under the light of spotlights, and being force-fed to spell the word "clavichord"... and she is very tired. So, Big Bob is showing off her big sister Olga's trophies. Olga is the Patakis' resident perfectionist (well, not quite resident, since Olga's only in a handful of stories). Her first trophy was in the city-wide spelling bee, spelling the word "qualm" to win, and Helga's been told this so many times. Anyways, Olga's filled a whole room at the Patakis' with trophies. Dad has saved her a small indescript spot, and eggs her to bring home the trophy. Back at the Arms, Arnold struggles to train as Grandpa gives him milk and cookies. Phil points out, "You know that your grandma and me will be proud of you no matter how good you do." And it doesn't sound like he'll be doing any good, since he just gives up on spelling the word "onomatopoeia". "Like I said Arnold, we'll be proud of you no matter what." Morning. City Auditorium. A banner proclaims: "WELCOME SPEELERS!" It's the day of the contest, and Arnold's here with his old folks. Surprisingly, he sees Gerald, and the two do the thumb gesture they always do. The only thing Gerald asks Arnold: "Where's the snack bar?" :D Backstage, Big Bob calls all the other contestants "suckers and saps", and gives Helga a heavy medal to wear on stage. It's so heavy, it drags her straight to the ground. :D Okay, bring it on! There are a grand total of ten contestants at the bee. This is the same "city" that has just three fourth-grade schools represented at the City-Wide Academic Bowl. Last person standing wins. And here we go! "Glacial" is misspelled. Helga spells "sanctimonious". Arnold gets "philately". We quickly cut between contestants spelling words, and six more contestants getting the boot. Helga struggles with "velocipede", but nails it anyhow. Big Bob decides he needs an insurance policy. Umm... maybe that isn't such a good idea?
